Fatboy Slim did the same a little while back, although I believe his crowd was closer to 300,000.

Evidently, this is conclusive proof that Fatboy Slim and then Tiesto are the bestest DJs in the world.

Dude, come on. System J, I know you're very knowledgeable about EDM, and music in general, but cut the guy some slack.
What it means is that Fatboy Slim and DJ Tiesto have a huge pull. How many other DJs could get that kind of a crowd to come out to party where they were the only DJs spinning? These are MASSIVE ,massive events. Only the Love Parade beats them in numbers, as well as being free, but the Love Parade includes numerous DJs.

It's obvious that someone sponsored the event and Tiesto got paid, but you gotta respect the fact that
a) the party was free for the crowd
b) that so many people showed up for an EDM event, especially outside of the UK or Germany
c) that Tiesto has such an amazing pull.

Best DJ on the planet or not, the man has a lot of fans, and he knows how to make the masses enjoy, even appreciate, EDM music.
Let's face it - it's much harder to do then many on here will admit.

PS kudos to all involved for pulling this off without a single incident.

Dance music's pretty big in South America, from what I've heard. The scene over there is getting a lot of attention recently, so I don't think it's geographically a big deal.

My sarcasm arises because Tiesto was very quick to trumpet the piffling crowd size for his TiC events, and I have little doubt he'll use this one as another big number to add to the Biggest DJ On Earth marketing campaign. I'm saying it's been done before, and done on a larger scale. I have a lot of respect for Norman Cook. Aside from all the other things he's done, he set the trend for monstrous free beach gigs a long time ago, and he's never exploited it to boost his image.

I agree, lets face it, where ever in the world it is possible to scale such an event...at the moment Tiesto, Paul van Dijk or someone else of the big 10(DJM)could easily fill a free beach event in Brasil with this kind of crowd.

If something is for free, see how many people will shown up, if it's Tiesto, Paul van Dijk or Norman Cook, a beachsoccer event will do have the same amount of visitors, typical Brasilian life style, everything happens at the beach and in the city,....so Tiesto nice job I don't think that there will be less than 3,000 visitors paying for a regular Tiesto's gig in Brasil, if it is not at the (free) beach.

The only places where he did paid gigs for more than 30.000 people where at the Netherlands (Tic1&2) both years the stadium were sold out, which is a lifetime achievement and will not be done so many times again...

I think that Tiesto's next world tour will be a success, he did tried before in 2004 / 2005 in the States, where he played in Stadium where he could hear his own voice echoing thru the stadium,....in otherwords, the Halls where as empty as an Oildrum maybe this year he will succeed with an other kind of show.....

Even the world's biggest promotion company couldn't organise a beach party like that unless it was for free entry.

How on earth do you close off a beach... and then force people to pay to get onto it.

Free beach gigs?

The one over here last summer, the tickets were selling for 35 pounds.

Well I'm almost positive that the 2002 Brighton one was free, because 150,000 more people turned up than had been planned for. Either the promoters had 150,000 extra tickets on hand just in case, or it was free. If anything, he's probably started charging again to cut down on that kind of thing, because I hear the Brighton council weren't too chuffed with what happened to their beach afterwards.
