Tickles me every time.

Exactly... I mean, would a truly benevolent God who created all life really doom a majority of his creation to an afterlife in hell simply because they were in the wrong place on earth?

God... I can't seem to leave this thread... must sleep...

do those of you that are religious in this thread think that the bible is a true story or a story created to be a representation of good moral behavior?

Well, referring back to kr00t0n's retort. Say I lived as an Amazonian tribesman my whole life and decided to go on a journey to discover what the rest of the world had to offer. During my journey I managed to come across a written manuscript outlining the principles of, let's call it 'Religion X.' I then come across a written manuscript outlining the founding principles of Christianity. It is at this point in time that I must choose one of these religions to believe and spread to my indigenous Amazonians. Since I have no frame of reference, I choose 'Religion X' and carry back to my people the knowledge and principles of this religion. Since I have learnt the principles of Christianity and have chosen not to take them on as my own and worship them, am I therefore damned to Hell because I have read about it?

That's why I think all religion was created...

Maybe I just see things in more abstract terms, but I think the idea of religion is simply to help guide man in how he should live, and I don't believe any one religion has it "right..."

They've all got great potential to teach, but unfortunately, as is well illustrated in this thread, the crusades, and in general the rest of the world, when self righteuosness & politics get in the way, religion is a pain in the ass...

I'm not religious. I hate that word. But, yeah, if you hadn't gotten it from earlier in the thread, I believe it's God's word, literally. But we're still friends, even though we differ in opinion.

Yes, another valid point. And it's when you start to break it down into scenario's like this, that make me the atheist (and somewhat rather sceptical atheist) that I am.

Yep... I had an amazing Phil prof this last year who really explained it in terms to me where I just had to question the idea of organized religion...

BTW, I do not think people who do take part in Organized Religions are weak willed or minded... I just personally deal with these things more internally... My questions and my "faith" are my own, and not something I choose to place or force upon other people...

Well here's the thing, Atheist believe that God doesn't exist.

I'm agnostic, in such I dont know if he does/doesnt, so I can't really believe.

Works for me, I'd rather be pleasantly surprised that there is an afterlife, than be very dissapointed if there isn't.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

I like your style, I respect your beliefs and you respect mine, which is the best way for stuff to work.
