Some really good movies listed so far. I second Turtles Can Fly, Children of Heaven (never before has a shoe caused so much drama), City of God.
What I love about many quality films is they take the mundane aspects of life and really show how important they are to people who don't live the high life so many other movies revolve around. The struggle to feed yourself in the city day to day is far more compelling than a slasher survivor movie or how the rich and beautiful lead their lives. That said, my recommendations.
Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (just watch it)
also from kurosawa,
Yojimbo and Sanjuro (don't need to be seen together but nice development of Toshiro Mifune's character, both have zany comedy, kinda like spaghetti westerns, they inspired good bad n ugly n other Eastwood, Sergio Leone films)
Kikujiro (cute tale of a boy and family friend, Beat Takeshi who is usually in gangster films, on a trip to find his mom, very sweet, a little fantasy)
3-Iron (one of the best movies I've seen, its from Korean director Kim Duk Ki, the 2 main protagonists between them have a total of 2-4 lines of dialogue, so engrossing how a movie holds your attention with minimal music and dialogue, awesome peice of film making)
the Professional (it isn't necessarily foreign, but films my Luc Besson are quality, especially the international version. US version cut out the questionable relationship a 40 something yr old Jean Reno and 13 yr old Natalie Portman had, still her best movie role to date)
Story of the Weeping Camel (a mongolian/french docudrama of camel herders in barren part of mongolia)
Twilight Samurai (good swordplay film regarding duty and honor of samurai, especially those who are poor and have little honor)
Happy Times (chinese film about a blind girl and abusive mother, its sad but there are lotta heartwarming moments in it)
Eat Drink Man Woman (good chinese comedy bout relationships, father dealing w/ daughters growing up)
thats my recommendations for now, just curious, who has seen Run Lola Run, and if you have, did you like it, cuz I found no point in that movie. Would be better if she was running from the techno viking and mosh girl.
