I've had the DJ1001's for 3 years now, and the band has just started to crack, and the phones themselves are fuzzing *slightly*
*BUT*
They have endured a RIDICULOUS amount of abuse.
When I first got them I stress-tested them by plugging them directly into my hifi sound card in my computer, cranked the equalizer, volume, and SRS effects in Windows Media Player, to the point where the headphones themselves were rattling across my desk and bouncing around. The songs I played were "Kill you Now" and "Dream Sequence" by Amon Tobin, so the bass was heavy and relentless, and the range of lows mids and highs was diverse.
I let them play like this for several minutes, then after returning the settings to normal, they still played fine with no distortion afterwards.
Astounding.
Also I've dropped them hundreds of times on accident because over the past few years I was on the move a LOT and I myself am kind of clumsy, tripping over the cord and whatnot in a hurry on my way to class.
These headphones stand up to a LOT of abuse, let me tell you.
I'd recommend being careful with them all the same though, because I'm tired of the band cracking on my pair so i'm trying to order another one, but they are hard to find for a decent price (when I first bought them I got lucky with a closeout deal and found them for $80 bucks).
Awesome, AWESOME headphones. So much so that in terms of sound quality they spoiled me.
I used them exclusively INSTEAD of speakers for countless hours every day.
Pure ear love.
That said, the Sony MDR-v700's are much more durable (you could probably beat someone to death with them), but IMO the IXOS sound better overall in terms of warmth and elegance.
