Amateur Mix CDs tracklisting or not?

I'm curious on your opinion on something. If a DJ mixes a CD, then makes a bunch of copies, should it have a tracklisting?

Personally, i think it should. The artists are the ones who made the songs, and they deserve recognition, and monetary compensation if you are selling the CD.

Now, i admit, i have made mixed CDs, burned 3 or 4, scrawled my name across in felt pen, and given them to a few close friends. I don't see anything wrong with this, i was really only doing it either as a favour for them, or to get feedback on my mixing. I'm very amateur, never played outside my house besides for the occasional house party.

But, last night i encountered another sort of DJ. He pretty much runs the "rave scene" in my town, he's far and away the biggest promoter, and also a widely known and talented DJ. he was spinning at a local club, last night, and selling his CDs at the door for $10 a pop. These are professional CDs, pressed in a plant or something, they look storebought, the case is very nicely designed, all in all a very professional CD. but, there is no tracklisting!

I asked him why, he said, for one thing, your just asking to get sued. Which i suppose i can see his point. His girlfriend says that if he puts the tracklisting on the CD, then anyone can just go buy those tracks and rip him off, steal his gigs etc.

hmmm.. i have the tracklisting for PVDs CD, and i don't see myself playing at the love parade any time soon!

Anyway, personally, i think this is weak, not putting the artist names on the CD. What is your opinion?

yes and no

it's an inconvenience trying to put tracklists on all your demo cds and most people don't really care and if they do they can always send you an email to the addy you put on the cdr

I think if you're selling it humm well that's tricky and you're mixed between needing to cover your costs and being honest with the fact you're making money off copyrighted material mixed feelings about that ....

I say you black mail that guy cause he's making money off copyrighted stuff
But the thing she told you about not wanting people to steal his tracks his gigs that's total BS

i usually don't include a tracklisting
if they want one, they can easily e-mail me and get one

as for the cd issue
you're allowed to sell cds that you've mixed yourself without getting the artist's approval

the only thing is that your cd must have "For Promotional Use Only" somewhere on it
as well, you can only charge enough to cover the costs of making the cd (graphics, buying blank cds, that sort of thing)

so generally you wind up having to charge about $10

so basically you can charge how much it cost to make that cd, but you can't make any profit

hahahah that's the weakest thing ive ever heard

what are people going to do? go buy the 14 or whatever songs on his cd and just spin those vinyls and steal all his gigs?

that's pretty lame if you ask me

it seems to me like he wants to keep it a secret because he sucks but has a lot of contacts and no competition

thats the kind of attitude that'll run the scene into the ground

the exact same thing happened to toronto

we had a huge rave scene here a few years ago and then it got so repetitive with the exact same djs playing the exact same events that everyone just lost interest...and now you're lucky if you can draw a crowd of a few hundred

most nights draw 50 people, if even that

meanwhile 3 years ago around this time there was 5000+ people partying all night in the rain in an industrial parking lot

yeah, his GFs claim is pretty lame. He is actually a pretty good DJ, personally, and he does have competition. but your right about the contacts, he has a lot of them.

too bad about Tdot.. our scene is going good here, we have a rave about once every couple months, and there are usually 500-1000 or more people, and theres a weekly clubnight that is always packed.
