Have Any Djs thought about this?

| hey, have any djs though about matching all your songs to the same bpm, so it would make it simpler for you to dj. If you think about it, it helps beginners beat match, because there is no need in changing the pitch. bad thing is, this would only work for cd players. With the traktor dj software, u can change a song to any bpm, then record it, then put it onto a cd and match the bpm with all the other songs u are djing with. I would think that this is a great advantage for the cd players, because u dont have to worry about beat matching every second. Not that i actually do all this, my friend suggested this to me. :) |

ok you would have no variety AT all. If all tracks were the same bpm they would essentially, all sound the same (same bassline in every track). And everyone would get bored of mixing, so only the noobs would benefit.
matching the pitch is not that difficult anyway, so after a month or two of practice your not really going to have this problem are you ? :) |

| DJs like Ferry mark the bpm on a sleeve, so they can quickly know how much pitching they have to do to match :) |

what this does it teach new djs how to mix, and not beat match. that way, when they go to play in a club and they are using vinyls, they dont know howt o beat match, since everything they practiced with was teh same bpm, better to learn to beat match first, if you practice, it shouldnt take taht long, probably like a month |

I don't think it's a good idea, beatmatching is a fundamental of djing, if u think so u could also record a mix cd and put it in your cd-player, it would be more easy and a more big advantage, but u would not be a dj...

anyone noticed that a lot of ferry corsten tunes are pressed at the same speed?
go on.. try it :p play about 4 ferry productions in a row, and i rekon there wont be more than 1 or 2% difference :) |

| If a mix doesn't start slower and gradually get faster then it will most likely lose its momentum after a while, unless the tracks were exceptionally good. If a mix starts slow at least it has somewhere to go. |

Haha, yes, i always say this and nobody believes me.
Gouryella - Ligaya
System F - Out of the Blue
System F - Soul on Soul
System F - Needlejuice
System F - Exhale
Vimana - We Came
all the same bpm - if you get the beats together they still will be 5 minutes later.
Loads of other tracks are on this exact bpm (like 137.7) - probably about 25% of all my vinyls are. |

add to that list:
Ransom - My Dance (Ferry Corsten Remix)
Yoji Biomehanika - Bangin Globe (System F Remix)
and i think also
Apoptygma Bezerk - Kathy's Song (Ferry Corsten Remix)
cheating scoundrel... :stongue: |

yeah man.
when i first started spinning, i mixed a bunch of epic/hard trance.
ferry corsten, dumonde type stuff. i would have one hell of a time cuz i thought everything was at totaly different speeds.
eventually i realized that almost all the tracks were the same speed.
anyway onto the topic at hand.
if you are takign all your tracks and ripping them onto the comp and putting them at the same BPM, you are cheating yourself as a DJ in teh same way as if all you do is look at BPM counters.
the fundamental part of DJing is being able to beatmatch any song, no matter what it is within a matter of seconds.
if you can't do that you are like a mathmatician that can't add.
I have nothing against beatcounters or writing down the BPM's of your tracks and such, but if you do this when you first start djing and never develop the ability to beatmatch any song within at least 30 seconds, no matter what you can't be a "good" DJ.
if you are actually takeing the time to rip tracks onto your computer, beatmatch them all to a certain BPM, and burn them all back onto a CD, you are wasting valuable time you could be spending on becoming a truely better DJ. |

Actually this is redundant, since if all your songs are at the same speed and you want to increase the tempo of your set, you can just increase the pitch by a particular amount per song.

I'm all for the "if it helps you do it, then do it" philosophy, and I if it really helps a DJ to get his beatmatching right, then I don't see any problem for him to burn his tracks to CDR at a fixed tempo. Drawbacks:
* You will inevitably lose sound quality if you record from CD to CD at a different speed (since both are digitally sampled).
* It's only worth abandoning an old way of doing things if your new way of doing things will never fail where the old method didn't. This new method isn't 100% reliable.
* Many many people (DJs alike) will not have much respect for your mixing ability.
* Of course, you always want to play with vinyl at a club, not CDs :).
* Do you really have the time/resources to convert your entire music collection to the same BPM? |
