| so are you then implying that tranceaddicts are not music lovers? |

if someone LOVES 1 genre, and does not respect any others
ie. they feel the type of music they like is superior to ALL other types
then i dont want to be catagorized in the same group as them
if you cant appreciate all/most types music and at least RESPECT the genres that dont float your boat then you are not a music lover, just some ing elitest.
you CAN like one type of music, but wouldnt it make more sense to say you are a "trance lover" or a "rap lover" then to say you are a music lover?
if you ONLY like soccer and HATE all other sports, are you a sports fan or a soccer fan? |

A true music lover can also sing in key and beat.
A true music lover finds some sort of good in all other genres of music other than his/her preffered genre
A true music lover cant get through a day without listening/playing music in those 24 hours
A true music lover can hold a conversation about any kind of music with anyone and can relate to specific artists of that genre.
A true music lover has a sense of curiousity to experiment with/listen to new styles and innovations in music
A true music lover has a general idea of the background/ history of various popular genres at least |
personnally i disagree with most of these, knowledge of music/groups/playing instroments is not needed to LOVE music
all it takes to love music is for that switch in ur mind to be set off when you hear the beat, once that happens and you FEEL the music you truly love the music, it has nothing to do with if you can play an instrument, wright a song, or know the names of every song at a club or on the radio.... its about if it touches you and reaches your soul more then the average person
everyone can hear music, but only some of us can really listen and enjoy it |

i don't think anyone has said anything about disrespecting music other than their own... |

One cannot define a "True Music Lover" because:
1. The word True does not exist. There is no comprehendable meaning that encompasses all the different beliefs.
2. Music is a weak definition. If a horse walks (making the beat), and the wind blows (making some kind of melody in your ear), is that considered music?
3. And the word Love? I won't even bother...
This question opens up hundereds of subjective opinions. |

im not gonna say ur wrong with that thought cos ur not..however if u really think about it, when u listen to a tune, u tend to find out who the artist is whether u want to or not....and one listening to several genres, u learn of artists in all of them...so its pretty much a concequence ;) |

on a personal note, i have composed several tunes by picking up sounds i hear while taking a walk or sitting in a bus or even listening to 2 different tunes clash |

GOOD POINT.
i want to also argue against the "loves all genres" deal.
I mean, i could never see myself ever liking stuff like:
-rock (esp. soft)
-punk
-r&b and "funky" stuff like that
And yet I love classical, trance, and prog - all of it, every nuance. so am i NOT a music lover?
Another example - am I not a music lover because I also do not like country music?? So are all the other 99% world's inhabitants non-music lovers too on this account? :haha: :haha: (ahh..country..lol)
Perhaps the definition of a "True Music Lover" could be:
"One who actively listens to one (or more) genres of music on their own, for the sake of the music itself."
Though this is a little too general, I think it's good because in this way, you can count people that like only one genre of music, but deeply, like many TA's here, whether they love trance or prog or what have you.
Also it allows for the crazy, love-all-genres (which I personally believe is strictly impossible), types.
AND, it gets rid of the britney-spears / n*sync loving masses, because they don't strictly listen for the sake of the music, but because of some crazy fantasies involving their favourite pop stars. I.e. they listen for the social and "coolness" factor, NOT for the music itself (which is crap).
It also discounts those who just listen to mainstream stuff on the radio and sing to the lyrics... Though I might get heavy disagreements on this point, I personally don't think that listening to a song about how your man/girlfriend left you, blah blah, crying in the rain, etc., to be music, because if I want to cry over my lost bf/gf, I'll do it on my own without the help of a sad song for it, thank you very much (that goes for raping and/or smashing up too.. just kidding! :haha: ) . Or even listen to some trance. :D The point is that most mainstream music is meant to be listened to for the sake of the lyrics, to evoke some sort of emotion. But I can also listen to some guy talking, and get the same effect (if he's good). Or read a good book. So that's not music. Non-lyric music evokes emotion, too, but at least it does it through the melody and the music itself, which is harder, more impressive, and truer to the definition of a music afficionado, IMO. :D Just my $0.02 on bashing mainstream stuff (kinda unrelated topic, though). |

| ^^^^^^^^^you got the point all wrong....what Flec and I are trying to say is that u give other music a chance and not straightaway go around bashing it and also accept the fact that it is the way some artists portray their art |

Oh, I see...
that's called an open mind... which is good to have not only for music, but everything else in life. :)
so i definitely agree here. |

You gonna sing me a pretty song? :haha:
I don't know if I agree with this totally...some people just can't sing or are hopeless at keeping rhythm, but still love music of all sorts.
But, I fit all those criteria, so by the power of LKD I am annointed a music lover.:D |

I'm a music hater... j/k...
So I seriously think you guys have gone too in-depth here...
Basically, in my opinion, a music lover is someone who loves music. That's it.. It doesn't matter if they love one kind of music, or all kinds of music. It doesn't matter if they hate all music except for one song. It doesn't matter why they love music (even if it's just because it makes them cool to listen to it.)
Anyone who listens to any kind of music because they love the music itself, or they love what listening to the music does to/for them is a music lover.
LOVE IT! |
