Me & My Frustration with Tiesto

ok heres the thing.. tiesto obviously is a very talented producer and a dj but i couldnt just avoid this one thing thats been on my mind... about a year ago when he announced that he no longer will make anymore gouryella tracks with ferry and the reason being because he claimed his style doesnt match the "gouryella sound" anymore and that
he has no time... so he leaves gouryella but the label demands another 'gouryella single' since it was still under contract agreement that gouryella release more material.. so ferry carries on the gouryella project without tiesto and completes "ligaya" with some help from a classical music composer and IMHO did an outstanding job giving the track that "epic gouryella feel" to it this time using a longer, more complicated main melody instead of the ear friendly simpler melodies used in the previous 3 gouryella releases...

so... during this time, tiesto ventures out to remixing genre questionable tracks, experiments different style of producing rather than his trademark trance productions, plays prog & tech-house filled sets(he had to play some trance here & there cuz obviously he got known for the trance sound..)and even disses the trance genre.. he says in one interview "djs are finding new ways to produce trance music without it sounding so gay." lol.. how can u say like this to something that got you where you are today.. someone that once said about the trance genre, "the best thing to come out of house music".. i mean, ppl noticed his trance remixes and productions and loved his pioneering "dutch trance" sound.. his remix of delerium's "silence" was the track that got him worldwide fame and to to call it "gay" just shows that got to his head waaay too much:rolleyes: ok and heres the fun part.. the NOW tiesto which i've been noticing, his recent sets has been filled with "gay trance", releases(or will release should i say..) a double disc compilation thats most definately trance-oriented(on both discs)
and even produced a new track which if you ask me its ing epic trance which has a similar title name as "ligaya" "nyana"...i mean, i thought his sound doesnt match the gouryella sound anymore? why is he producing 99 tiesto-ish trance? if this was the case, why leave gouryella in the first place? honestly i like the new track nyana and i have nothing against his producing skills.. its the MAN im questioning about:) thanx for reading thru my frustration ppl, peace:)

you are absolutely right.

And Tiesto is not the only one to diss Trance. PvD disses it, Digweed disses it...

"without it sounding so gay" - eh, that's Tiesto for you?
The Trance Master?
Tell you what... the MAN is gay :p

I love trance, but sometimes even the songs that I like tend to sound like elevator music with a beat.

My opinion of Tiesto, especially given what you've written? Great producer, not a doubt about that, but not that great of a person.

Soon enough he'll be flying downhill like Oakie in the wake of fame. I respect him for his productions, sure, but I also consider an artist's integrity in acting as a figurehead for the music, something I feel Tiesto isn't too great at.

I think this is carrying on too far. Although you are right in the fact that the latest album has some of the trance-friendlier tunes, it still has the unmistakable Tiesto sound. Something that Tiesto was able to do, that one-dimensional dj's like AvB and Ferry Corsten could not, is mix his interpretation of trance music and add variety, depth and color. His sets have wide ranges of sounds while still all carrying the vibe and character of Tiesto himself.

As for his reference to "gay" trance, I would think we would know what he meant by it. I'm not going to pretend that I knew exactly what he meant but I will assume that he was referring to the cheezy, formulaic trance that fills the recordstores lately. The air of almost "euro-disco-trance" that died long ago is an older generation sound and is "happy" music.

If anything, Tiesto's sound HAS changed. He is deeper and darker, yet still holds trance elements in his music. His sound is definitely not compatible with Gouryella now. And it is good that he has moved on. I'm not sure if I would question his commitment to the genre as I hear he is a tireless worker and dedicated to the music. So if you give him a little bit of credit, then maybe what he said is being taken out of context?

Wow...a whole tirade on Tiesto bashing trance, despite the fact that he never actually dissed trance at all

Translation into laymens' terms: DJs are still producing trance but they're now discovering ways to leave the cheeze factor out.

Which is good, because he's saying it's now possible to produce trance with all its good points, minus the "kick-BASS-kick-BASS" and "dink-dink-dink de-dink dink-dink" clichés. In other words, he's saying that trance is evolving. Not dying, but evolving.

p.s. I'll blame him on this: I hate it when people use names of marginalized groups (i.e. gay) to describe something they don't like.

Yeah, that irritates the hell out of me, especially coming from someone in the public light.

couldn't agree more

I agree with Tiesto.

Personally I never attacked Tiesto for experimenting with new styles and stuff. Thats actually great of him to take the risk of diversifying his performances, even though it turned out everybody hated him.

Anyway back on topic. I think he left Gouryella at the time because at that time he decided that he was going to experiment and therefore didnt think he would be able to live up to the Gouryella standard if he didnt quit. Now I assume he's done with "experimentation" and is back to where he belongs. However, I still dont think his new sound right now fits Gouryella anyway. Its a good idea that he quit Gouryella and discontinued Magik, because he's saving himself from releasing unworthy music.
