yeah, often times people ask me if i listen to "techno," and i am forced to give then this reponse: "you have never heard real techno in your entire life." I then give a long lecture about the different styles of electronic dance music, and come off as pompous and arrogant. Of course, this is not always teh case. Oh, wait. yes it is. I have never had a time when someone actually was listening to techno, and not some other form of electronica. it REALLY bugs me when people call IDM techno:nervous: :nervous:

I suppose the easiest way to repsond to "do you listen to techno" would just be to say "yes," and end the conversation.

haha, actually, there's a quote i rather like. goes something like

'There are very few who truly know and remember trance. Those that do, still call it techno.'

think someone had it as their sig sometime back.

it always amuses me when people on here get all irritated and pissed off when people refer to trance/house/jungle collectively as "techno". guess what guys? you probably do the same thing with other types of music. ill bet most of you call any type of metal "metal".. (even tho theres black metal, death metal, speed metal, swedish metal, etc). or most dark/machinelike music as "gothic" (even tho theres industrial, gothic, ebm, etc).

you all probably do the same damn thing to other genres. and people on other message boards are probably bitching about people like you also.

why not accept that if someone isnt into your kind of music, that they will probably bunch it together? they arent trying to personally offend you, they just arent into it as much. just as you shouldnt expect people to know the various sub sub genres of techno/electronic music, i wouldnt expect you to know what death or black metal is.

who cares?

you are right. no one cares and nobody should. the only time i have beef with an issue like this is when my own close friends do this. i have told them what trance is and how its not techno.

i mean, even if they aren't paying any attention to detail, the least they can do is say the name of the genre or spell it right if the conversation is through IM's. i've had a couple of friends call trance, "trans" and this has been on going for as long as i've been into trance. thats 4 years and they can't take the time of day to learn one word/name.

btw trance IS a word in the english vocabulary while "trans" is not.

to be honest, maybe i'm taking it too far by saying this but its like a disrepect to me that they can't even spare 1 teeny tiny cell in their brain to store the name of the music i love. i took the time to know some of the crap they like and actually remembering them, the least they can do is return it.

yes, i'm quite demanding. LOL :p

try not to flame me on this, cuz i haven't done my research...
but didn't techno popularize before trance?
as in .. didn't techno develop before trance really had a chance to?

in this manner, you can see why most electronica-type music would be labeled as techno - and is passed down by 'word of mouth'.

adding to whats said above by others, people that don't listen to electronica won't know about it, and will refer to it as 'techno'. just because they don't know otherwise.

don't get me wrong, i dont particularly like it either when people refer to what i'm listening to as techno. but hey, its not me thats missing out :D

Haha. You have a great point there...
There are sub-genres of pop too. Examples:

Cheese pop
11 y/o girl pop
child molester pop ( a la R Kelly)
and so on.......:toothless

What I do is just burn someone a CD of a truly great liveset or cd by one of the trance masters. It's like showing someone a picture; YOu can save yourself the 1000 word spiel. :happy2: :) :p :D ;)

except that: calling all metal 'metal' would be a correct term, while calling trance 'techno' is not. If one was going to talk generally about trance/techno/house/etc they would say "electronic dance music" or even "electronica." It really isn't that hard.

The worst is when i heard an american refer to "the real mccoy" (Euro cheddar pop) as a techno song when i was in university. I almost lost it! It's also kind of ironic that Eminem is a native of Detroit (techno city) and that a track taken from his quote "nobody listens to techno" is quickly becoming one of the most popular white label remixes out there.
mndeg
i wasn't referring to people that dont listen to trance
i'm talking about people that have listened to trance for at least a year and they call their cheese techno

go on kazaa, search for "techno mix"
none of it is techno, they can mix songs but can't define their own genre?
