on an electronic music forum that is sacrilege :whip:

unless it's the eJay forums, that's the only place where that's acceptable.

'There are very few who truly know and remember trance. Those that do, still call it techno.'

think someone had it as their sig sometime back.

Excellent quote!
It kinda pinpoints the reason this whole discussion started at the DI Forums. Some old-schoolers pointed out, in repsons to mndeg's rant, that back in the very beginning of the 90's most music you heard at a rave was called techno. Trance, as a label for a music genre, didn't start to appear until 1991-1992. The first group using was Dance2Trance (DJ Dag & Jam El Mar) who released their self titled EP on Suck Me Plasma 1991 (I think)..

After that it got divided in a horde of different labels and sub-labels....
mndeg
but people that havent been alive in 1990 are calling everything TECHNO

i blame it on the media
tranceboy
This happens in Australia also. Quite sad really.

Did you actually go to the forums and see what mndeg is talking about, or did you just take his word for it? Unfortunately, it seems he is upset that when he tried to flame newbies for calling trance "techno" over at the DI forums, he ended up being flamed back by all the regulars, about how it wasn't a big deal. This post is apparently his reaction to that, tying to gain some sympathy from the TA folks.

Further, how sure are all the people agreeing with mndeg that techno is not a genre that includes trance? Because there are a great number of very knowledgeable folks out there (i.e. not EDM newbies) who are quite adamant that "techno" is the original, and thus correct, term for the genre. (There are, of course, plenty of people who argue this is wrong... I don't know who is right.)

Finally, sothis's point is a good one. And if, like nic01445, you think metal isn't the same, try something like "classical". Who here bothers to call classical music classical, baroque, romantic, etc.? It has been labeled "classical" by the populace, and so it sticks. Just like EDM/electronica/whatever has been labeled "techo" by the populace, and it sticks.

So to sum up for those with a short attention span:
- mndeg needs to get a life
- "techno" may well be the correct name of the genre, anyway
- just relax and worry about more important things in life than whether people bother to learn that you listen to trance, not techno.
mndeg
wtf stop using EDM its a non-word
in summary
1. get a life (this is a cool all purpose insult that works online!)
2. your mom (see above)
3. go back to di

I have to back brash up on this one. The thread starter began trolling on DI Forums and then claimed that we at DI call Trance music Techno. Maybe some peopel there do, but not all. And as a matter of fact, who cares? Electronica music is Electronica. Most songs these days are borderline between several different genres that no one knows. And the genre boundaries aren't all that vivid and distinct anyway.

Well, that's just my $0.02 Canadian.
mndeg
only a trance newbie wouldn't even know their own genre
just sad
Mosaic
actually, I used to post regularly on DI, but I got sick of all the damn newbies.

Valid point however people that listen to the music and know it fairly well would look at the entire situation and say things have changed, and to follow your example "techno" has been divided into sublabels/genres like trance, hard trance, tech trance (even some prog/house I would think might possibly fit this, look at Detroit "techno" where it all started). Mainly due to what I have just stated I would say that it no longer can be classified as JUST techno and to do so would just be stupid, especially if you KNOW a lot about the music or aren't just a noob. (and are in a forum where one would know better...)

Sothis's point IS a good one and I agree with it but I really doubt you wouldn't see people who LISTEN to metal just broadly classify a certain subgenre of metal like "death metal" as just "metal" because it is just ignoring what it is really considered by the people themselves that listen to it right? (at least that's the way I look at it). Same goes for those that listen to classical. To a composer or producer of that style of music or an avid fan, if you would just say "oh that's good classical" how do you think that person would react? Esp in a position where the person who asked it is expected at least a LITTLE to know the difference between that specific producer's style, whether it's baroque or romantic or whatever as compared to just being "classical" music. Just the way I look at it...

Also those of us that are annoyed w the whole thing aren't just that way because of a little genre confusion (at least I'm not). if it were as easy as saying not that song is prog or house instead of trance there'd be no problem. I think it's just because they do NOT know that there is a sub genre of electronic music called trance so they refer to it as techno?? (just curious...) If that is the case then they should listen to more of the music and get it right...
