Celeron vs Athlon
View this Thread in Original format

I have always thought of AMD Athlon as being better than Celeron processors (yet I also thought Celerons were easier to overclock)

But how do the performances actually differ?

what celeron are you looking at? atm imm using a xp1800 , but if i could afford it i would get a p4 system, its all down to personal choice really. if your overclocking make sure you get a decent motherboard as well, and some quality ram helps

DONT BOTHER WITH CELERON!

They may be easy to overclock but they have a low cache which means they are basically s**t for anything other than basic apps.
If you wanna produce/mix or even play games then choose AMD or even a P4 if you afford...AMD are cool tho.

yeah but the lower price of the celerons does make it worth while, espeically if upgrading from a old s370 motherboard

Thanks for your help guys

Also true, especially with my budget, but I recon the price differential is no where as big as the performance gap.
jonsimmonds
also make sure you get a decent motherboard, tell us your aprox budget, and what you need to buy for, and any parts you have all ready that can be put to use :)

if youre still using a socket 370 or slot 1 mother board, a celeron 1.4 with the proper adapter is an inexpensive upgrade. im using a celeron 1ghz overclocked to 1.33ghz and it kills a P4 1.4/1.6Ghz in non memory intensive benchmarks.

if youre buying a whole new system go with the athlon, they are better overall vs an celeron.

Uhh yah the newer celerons have just a much cache as a P4 or AMD. The only real difference now is that the p4 handles a full load better since it disipates heat better.

that or you could play some ms-dos games....

how much £££ you got to spend on the system and what do you need?

Celeron is a Joke now. it used to be the bomb in the good ol days of the p2. not its craptastic

just about anything cept video encoding, or code compiling. games dont use much memory once youre ingame.

the celeron cumine and tualatin are not crap... just look at these benchmarks of a P3 tualatin (which is about +/-3% from a celeron tualatin): http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files...alatin(3).shtml

i for one would take a p3/celeron tualatin 2ghz over a P4 non-northwood 2ghz or athlon 2ghz1.4Ghz, as long as it has a memory upgrade like ddr, but then again the p3 wouldnt take much advantage of the ddr :(

i will agree though that the P4 based celerons are crap.

again... if CraSHer[UK] is using a slot1 or socket370 based motherboard a tualatin based celeron w/ an adapter would be the most inexpensive upgrade.
