Hey mate, welcome to the addiction :)

I'd suggest getting Technics 1200 Mk 2's. These are the industry standard decks...They are SOLID as, and are @ every club....anything else you have to adjust from or upgrade from at some point. Cartridges, I suggest if you have spare money, Orotfon Concorde Nightclub E's By far the best for a trance DJ and the kit is $600...The standard Stanton 500's are good if you can't tho...Or the Ortfon OM series...

Mixer, Industry standard in a Small/Average club is the Pioneer DJM-600 That's about $3k?. Vestax 175 is a VERY good mixer that's not as expensive and has awsome quality (loud/can be pushed harder then the DJM-600, but lacks effects).

headphones, if you got the dosh go the seinheiser 25 or 25sp's...that's abotu $400....otherwise I donno, the sony's are OK, are the technics...I haven't used the Pioneer one's Armin has, hear they are better then the seinheiser and a bit cheaper...

A good setup is NOT Cheap but will save u having spare gear lying around after you've had to upgrade.

Let me know if I can be of any help. I'm in Sydney CBD.

Cheers,

I suggest waiting as long as u have to to get Technics......Stantons are good (i've swapped a mate 4 a few weeks) but they are sooo much touchier, even tho, i've read like 10 reports of them having the same tourque.....there's a MASSIVE jump in the quality of the platter, and the general feeling between the two....

I'm in tears learning to beat match again, a challange i'm certainly enjoying, but a few times i've wanted 2 belt out a set instead of trying 2 mix...

From all the prices I have seen, Techs are being sold a bit cheaper than the stanton decks (at least new).

if you only want cheapies to start off, stanton str8-30s/60s aren't too bad, but I would only recommend starting off on cheap decks if you aren't sure whether you'll stick with DJing. even if you only want to do it for a hobby, if you're going to DJ longer than maybe a year you will probably get frustrated with crappy decks.

I bought str8-30s 6 mths ago and now I am probably going to be getting some techs in a couple weeks, so the pair might be up for sale soon :)

but i am glad i made the choice for cheap decks because I have like 50 vinyls now compared to being able to afford about 10 if i had bought a pair of technics decks

get technics if ur positive bout stickin to the hobby.

for a beginner i suggest stanton str8 series decks.
nice, tho sensitive.
mixer, 2 channels, 3 band eq. e.g. djm300
carts, hehe i'm using ortofon OM PRO s.

do ur research and i'm sure u'll find something that suits your needs. shop around a bit too, as they're always sets going up for sale as ppl are constantly either upgrading or having trouble finding the time to dedicate to their gear.

I've rarely heard anyone that knows their stuff saying to get anything other than technics. The cheapest place in Aus that I've seen is www.keelo.com.au though they are definitely solid enough that buying a decent second hand pair would probably be slightly cheaper and, assuming they haven't been hammered, should be in fine condition. You probably won't save all that much as they hold value pretty well though due to the quality of manufacture. Check out the DJ booth section of this website for more info on equipment etc.

Oh another thing: people going overseas and bringing back equipment is probably even cheaper than prices in Aus. A friend picked up a couple of pairs of Sennheiser HD25s for $305 each in Singapore. Catalogue price here: $470 (though you can often get them for around $400ish)

Sorry wade :) the djm - 600's you can get new for just under $2000 try DMC Lighting and Sound, best prices in Sydney without a doubt!

but if you have money to burn buy a Allen Heath Xone 62 mixer, you can grab that for $3200 or there abouts! that mixer will do you for life! best ever!

Doubt fall into the trap ofd saying "im only new, i dont need a big pro mixer" because with dj'ing you progress quickly and before you know it your wanting more features! TRUST ME! i outgrew my mixer in a year! so get something up there the DJM-600 i would go for if money was an issue if not then go the xone!

Good luck!
