Im looking to buy 2 powered speakers for my new set up. This was i can be mobile and not have to worry about amps and all that nonsense. The speakers i have in mind now are the Samson EX20's. They bump 200 watts each, so i think thats more than suffecient. Anyways what do you guys feel are the best powered speakers, or any recomendations for speaker set up.

JohnSmith is right, Mackie SRM450's seem to be the way to go.
I have a pair and absolutely love them. They are rugged (I throw them in my truck a lot), easily moveable, and sound fantastic. They also have fly points so you can position them from the wall or ceiling. As with the JBL's, they are expensive, but look around and don't be afraid to give an offer. I got mine from Guitar Center and made out with a nice deal.
Hope this helps a bit. |

Mackies SRM series are all Monitor speakers, they aren't really good for PA use, though powerful enough to do the job if needed. If you want a good sounding PA system get separate speakers and amp. IF you want the best and money is no object get TURBOSOUND, but be ready to spend around $3750.00 EACH but something that's good sounding get something like Community XP500
at $398.95 each or
Community XLT42E
at $510.95 each
and get a Crest Audio or Carver amp. |

I have used all sorts of set up.
I own the Mackies for 2 years with a sub.
Also I would recommend getting the aphex 204 for those concrete buildings.
I still have a back and I don't have a belly. PA and AMP friends are hitting the Chiropractor.
JohnSmith I'm with you bro.
Peace,

lol, thanks man. :)
BTW what is an aphex 204 and why would you need it for concrete buildings?
I was almost thinking of getting one of these:

i'm sure sound quality woudn't be great, but it's super portable, i could take my decks down to the park and set them up for the afternoon! and it's about the price of ONE mackie 450, for amp/mixer, two speakers and mics.
Only thing that put me off is, there is no sub, or sub out even, and i love my bass. |

DJ Tranz: "Mackies SRM series are all Monitor speakers, they aren't really good for PA use, though powerful enough to do the job if needed."
Very true, I failed to mention this. Personally, I use them as both. When I play out, my 2 SRM450s do the job quite well. Add in a 1000 dollar sub and I am set for now. But as Tranz said, they are not PA speakers. If you plan on playing outdoors a lot, Mackies are gonna be pretty weak (at least my setup would be).
When I play a club, I don't have to worry about speakers, and when I use my Mackies to play out, it is indoors (usually) with a smaller crowd.
Thanks for the clarification. Now to see about a "business" loan...;) |

Hey John, here is what Aphex204 is:
THE MODEL 204 dramatically enhances live, recorded, broadcast and webcast sound. The patented Aural Exciter enhances detail, clarity and imaging. It has even been scientifically proven to increase intelligibility. It pulls a vocal or an instrument up out of a mix. It punches up an entire mix, even in a noisy or reverberant environment. The new Optical Big Bottom, adds low-end punch with deeper, more powerful bass. This enhanced bass can be packed into your tracks without overloading the recorder and into your PA system without adding more amps or speakers.
You cannot achieve these improvements with any other processing regardless of price. There are many “enhancers” on the market , but none can match the effectiveness and musicality of the patented processes in the Model 204.
The Aural Exciter restores the subtle nuances that are often damaged in the recording process. Its patented Transient Discriminate Harmonics Generator determines which parts of the signal need harmonic enhancement while other “enhancers” do not have this intelligence, making their effect much less musical. The effect creates more space around each element of the mix and greater overall dimensionality. Additionally, the Big Bottom gives more and deeper bass without overloading the recording medium. Also, record your stereo masters, CDs, and car tapes through the Model 204 - they will sound better no matter what the source or where you play them back, this even applies to heavily bit rate reduced audio sources such as MP3 files.
The Model 204 will improve the performance of just about any sound system. It will extend the apparent response at both ends of the spectrum and will increase the width and uniformity of high frequency dispersion. The “ dead spots” are filled in without “hyping” the high end. The Big Bottom increases low frequency density - greater loudness with no increase in peaks. This process, unlike multiband compression, does not change the impact of the bass. All this without adding more amps or speakers!
Broadcasting and webcasting have limited frequency response and dynamic range. The Aural Exciter and Big Bottom extend high and low frequencies without eating up headroom or causing more limiter action. Broadcasts are louder and more present. Webcasts are cleaner and more natural sounding. The effects are noticeable even on tiny computer speakers.
The Model 204 improves the detail and articulation of your amplified instrument. The Aural Exciter extends the highs by restoring the natural overtones that are often lost in miking and amplification. Big Bottom extends the lows for bass instruments. These enhancements can help you punch through in a noisy or reverberant room and make your current rig ‘big enough’ for much larger rooms.
FEATURES:
Two independent, low noise channels
Adjustable Tune, Harmonics and Mix Controls on Aural Exciter
Adjustable Drive, Tune and Mix Controls on Big Bottom
Switchable -10dBV/+4dBu operating level
Balanced XLR and 1/4” I/O
Internal Power Supply
Widely used in the professional recording industry, across various applications.
We have them on sale for USD $249.95
As for Fender Passport system, get this one instead, Fender PD250
it is 250watts and bass output is pretty good.
the one you mentioned the Fender PD150 is overpriced by pssl, we have them at everyday low price of $599.95(and no extra charges for overweight shipping, that's bull on pssl.com part) but I can do better than that if you are really interested. |

thanks tranz.. I'll think about it. but i really think i want one with a sub, or at least a sub out.
I'm sure the bass is better on the 250 watt one, but without a sub i think it would sound very bass shy outside.
Are there any other systems similar to this? (mixer, amp, 2 speaker combo) under $1000US that would be worth looking into? |

John, actually the Fender PD250 reaches pretty damn low, frequency response 30Hz-30KHz not bad for a portable PA system!!! |
