Review: Richie Hawtin @ the Opera House

It was nice to see that the 1st couple people in line were DJ Hordash & the Highroller. We didn't want to be the 1st ones in the club tho, so we went to the Blue Moon next door for drinks. They have a DJ set-up in the back, and the dj who went on...... omg. A deaf and blind person could mix better! Every mix was a trainwreck, and he'd jump from trance, to Euro, to breaks with every tune. At least he dropped "Nothing but You". Poor fellow. We were joined by Endlesswave, and then we decided to head into the club, where I quickly found Skipper.
I shoulda used this money to go to the Ben Harper concert instead- it was just too damn hot!!! No wonder paramedics are on staff there! Bottom line: this venue sucks.
Got in just as Greg Gow was finishing. Clark Werner was playing some cool ambient stuff, but its the sorta stuff u need to sit and chill to, and the Opera House isn't that sorta venue, nor did that set seem suited for the type of event it was. Magda went on and finally dropped something with a bassline and beat, and people started moving, but it still wasn't my speed. By 12:45, I was passing out while sitting down on the corner of the stage, from the heat and boredom. That heat also made my body swell a bit, making the cast I'd just been fitted into that day very uncomfortable.
Hawtin gets on stage, and so do those Camel cigarette Hump girls. < That little routine they did when they got up there was priceless! They were quickly shoo'ed off stage (which probably pissed the Camel people off), but I will have hours (ok, minutes) of fun re-inacting their 'deep-throating cigarette' routine to friends that missed it. Of course, it looks different when I do it, as they weigh half as much as I do, but u get the point.
I'm glad I got my pics of Hawtin at the beginning of his set, because he had them turn the stage lights off moments later, which sucked. I really love those starry-sky backdrops, and once that was gone, it only made me concentrate on the heat problem even more, with nothing to focus on visually. This was my 2nd time seeing Hawtin, and while his mixing skills are incredible, his style doesn't do it for me. I really need my techo harder. I started to enjoy what he played between 3-4am as well, but the only track that blew my mind was played at 3:28am- it was very trancey/ spacey sounding. I tried to see if anyone could ID it for me, but no luck. In fact, I didn't recognise 1 song the entire time I was there.
I'd had enuf at 4:15, and decided to leave, with a very drunk & hurting Highroller in tow. Saw those Circus Orange guys out in the street handing out flyers. They were these guys in orange suits on some jumping stilt things, running & jumping thru the streets. THAT was wicked! Got home, set Graham up on the futon, and slept til 1:15pm. (Graham- too bad u couldn't come to the Promise beach party- it was incredible!)
On the positive side, the projected visuals were really cool, the stage looked great (b4 it went dark) and people were very friendly. |

What can I say? Fifth consecutive day drinking hardcore in a row. Pulled a Diginut, don't remember anything except that I ed up my knee hardcore, and saw a co worker from my old job there which was pretty cool. I heard it wasn't that good so whatever.
Thanks Nat so much for letting me stay over, if you didn't I would have not got home that night LoL!
I met a guy there that went to I Love Techno and he said Richie Hawtin had one of the best sets. It seems that anytime a Techno DJ comes to Toronto, they do poorly, except for Adam Beyer, I wonder why that is..
edit: OMG Nat! How long did it take you to type that up with one arm?!?! |

| Hey, did anyone go to the afterparty? Although unlikely, I was worried that maybe Hawtin made an appearance there and I had missed it because of my preoccupation with bathing. Christ, that was the hottest and most suffacating party I've been to in a while. Worse than Lotus! |

The guy didn't specify which year he saw him. |

Don't have time to post a full review at the moment, but soon...Nat, can I see the pics? I want that one you took of me, dorianne and Paul! |

| Damn! I thought dancing to trance for 6 hours was tough, nevermind going though 3 hours of Tekno like mad...mixing was badass, so were the tunes. As soon as Richie came on he laid it down. Add TEKno to the list of more electronic tunage I listen to. |

"While not every beat-match was flawless at the Toronto show, not every bassline didn't get old like stale gum, and maybe that was the point: that you felt it, got disoriented, and felt enveloped by the mood-altering effects of Hawtin's electronic music."
So.. I guess there was a lot of bad mixing and every bassline got old like stale gum?
haha... I love poor journalism. |
