Toronto will not be making a bid until at least 2016 but more probably 2020
This is due to the fact that NYC has a bid going for 2012 and as it stands, will probably win because of the sympathy the rest of the world holds for NYC after the terror attacks.
Since Vancouver was announced as the 2010 host city and The IOC is reluctant to give the Olympics to cities in the same country within 10 years it will be hard to get the bid for hosting the Olympics anytime soon . So I've heard through the grapevine and media outlets that the earliest TO will even stand a chance of getting the games will be 2024. By then the city will be suffocated by the lack of funding from other levels of government, deteriorating transit, unsurmountable gridlock, and overall deteriorating urban infrastructure that it will be hard to win over the hearts of the IOC so that we can hold the games. Toronto's bid in 2001 for the 2008 games were very weak (compared to the other cities) We will need the support of all three levels of government but more importantly the support of the city residents (which we had absoloutely none of last time) to even stand a chance....Hey, sorry for the rant. I'm done now |
wow thats a pretty grim outlook, so much for being optimistic mr urban planner ;)
*waits for ryanm to become an NDP member and make a bid for Toronto's mayoral race* |

2010?!
Damn, I don't even know if I'm gonna live that long... let alone where I'll be in 7 years from now, so I really couldn't care less where the Olympics are held. Then again, I'm happy for all you Canadians!
Now, who's going to the Olympics in Greece next summer? I'd like to start a roll call for that right now... |

the IOC is one of the worst bureaucratic messes in this world. Even Canada's own IOC chairman Richard Pound resigned over this.. There's so much ass kissing and squabbling going on behind the scenes not to mention politics and money, which as well know, buys the Olympics in the end.
Check this out, since 1992:
1992: Barcelona, why? Juan Antonio Samarach's hometown.
1994: Albertville, why? Money Scandal.
1996: Lillehammer, why? Lloyd Robertson.
1996: Atlanta, why? NBC multibillion dollar TV Contract & Money Scandal.
1998: Nagano, why? Money Scandal.
2000: Syndey, why? Money Scandal.
2002: Salt Lake City, why? NBC multibillion dollar TV Contract & Money Scandal.
2004: Athens, why? Sympathy vote over losing it to Atlanta in 1996 over money scandal, and the fact that they want to "return" the Olympics to it's birthplace for the first games of the 21st century (and the 21st century started in 2001 not 2000)
2006: Turin, why? Whoa.. clean vote?? wells, it did come after the changing of the IOC voting rules, but let's just wait and see.
2008: Beijing, why? In my opinion, one of the worst and likely most politically involved decisions ever.. the Chinese are NOT ready for this, and yes I am part Chinese myself. This is also a sympathy vote for Beijing after losing it to Sydney for 2000 cuz of ANOTHER money scandal. Not to mention that this was also Samarach's crowning glory before his exit as IOC president.
2010: Vancouver, why? Well let's just say that finally playing fair gets u somewhere, yes the Canadian way. But the fact that PyeongChang came so close because of politics still goes to show you that there's bias..
2012: ???
wells .. we'll see. I agree with ryanm's analysis somewhat .. altho NYC, hmmm i dunno .. it has a lot of advantages and disadvantages. All i know is that the competition is gonna be FIERCE in that year! Some of the bidding cities are some of the most reknowned cities in the world. (If any of you have played that game Civilization, you'll know what I mean!) Anyways , yea I don't think that TO honestly stands a chance against that grid. Aside from that, I also heard that Rio will be entering the bid, and the fact that the Olympics has never been held in South America, also gives it HUGE leverage. And anyone notice how the US is the only country that seems to be allowed to host 2 games within a 10 year span .. ?? hrrmmzz.. gee i wonder why .. *cough* Bob Costas *cough*
Wells, as fantom has said, by then who knows what we'll all be doing. I highly doubt that I'm even gonna be LIVING in TO by then so maybe it's better that it's not held here! All i know is that had we been awarded 2008 (which I strongly felt we should have been), all of us would have seen some totally amazing things happen in our city. But ah wells .. on the bright side, we haven't lost bids at much as Istanbul, which I believe has lost it 5 or 6 times or something... ouch.
congats to Vancouver tho, they did deserve this. |

oh yea .. and here's a quick update on the potential bidding grid for 2012 ..
Havana, Cuba
Leipzig, Germany
Madrid, Spain
London, England
Moscow. Russia
New York, USA
Paris, France
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (probable)
gah! i dun think TO has a chance, not to mention VC getting 2010.. guess i'm gonna have to enjoy the first TO Olympics with my grandkids or something .. :whip: |

| having the olympics in TO would actually hurt the city. we would lose money - we would have to build the facilities (stadiums), etc. well, that was for the 2008 olympics at least. |

I disagree, you have any idea how much $ will be injected into the local economy?
How about the creation of full-time and part-time jobs thanks to the need to "build" those buildings, as well as various other things to get ready.
Not to mention that it would put Toronto on the international map. |

Yah i would have to agree, i think hearing that since the olympics in LA that the games have turned a profit every year. Plus the spin off effects are great from the games. Calgary made a name out of its self from 88, i travel teh world and people ask where i am from and i say calgary and they mention the games. |

actually the only two games that came out profitable were those in Atlanta (thanks to Coka Cola's sponsorship) and Sydney. Every other city has lost money with the worst being Montreal which to this day is still being payed off with taxpayers money. That's because the contruction was plagued with delays, under budgeting, etc.
Even if Toronto lost a bit of money, the benefits of improved infrastructure such as recreational facilities, transit, roads, parks, etc, would far outweigh the 'losses' associated with the Olympic Games. This is a prominent misconception with the general but they always seem to forget the benefits that the Olympics Bring. And yes I agree that there is a lot of negative image associated with the games as well (scandals, corruption, etc) but once again the positive elements of the games IMO far outweigh the negative ones.
When you look at the whole picture, the Olympic games are a wonderful international event promoting, peace, sportsmanship, unity, and comradery around the world |

That, and getting around this city would be a total mayhem... they'd have to build another subway line or something, since the TTC as it is can barely keep up with all these people in GTA! |
