Ever considered using Linux ? Then read on. If not then i Dont think this thread will interest you, anyways as you know Linux can be very complex especially setting everything up and getting everything to run i.e soundcards , video , internet , graphics cards etc. In the last two days I have managed to - Install Mandrake OS 9.1 / KDE 3.1 - With ADSL Connection / Video and Sound cards all working including printer and other peripherals. As you know Windows is the easiest OS in the world and probabiy the most used, but I have gotten fed up with all the blue screens , dll errors , and cheap programs with no flexibility on anything you do, I still have a PC with XP Proffesional on with 60 GB HDD, with 30Gb of Trance and Applications which I keep just incase my Laptop breaks. Ive written a little paragraph or two on the setup and how easy it is.

----------------------Basic Setup----------

Mandrake Linux (Dolphin) 9.1 / Running KDE 3.1 ( All Free from Mandrake FTP )

STEP 1. Download 3 .ISO's burn them onto CD's / NERO.
STEP 2. FDISK Laptop , create a new partition / Goto BIOS , boot from CD-ROM
STEP 3. Install Mandrake / Select Packages and Hardware ( It detected my 5 Year old Laptop Video and Sound Automatically )
STEP 4. Setup Root Password and Create a USER & Pass
STEP 5. Boot KDE / at earth# startx
STEP 6. Install ADSL Line , Select Vendor and Modem , Install Packages from CD. ( check site to see if your Hardware is Supported )
STEP 7. Configure Desktop / Script and COmmands Install Chat Klients and News server , Email

ALL Complete

dude, that is some ownage right there! especially screen #2 looks so sweet! i dunno why i quit using linux... i guess because it didn't support my scanner, mouse, and usb harddrive... but i see they completely redesigned kde.... nice

it's just that after i installed win2k pro, i've been pretty content with it... doesn't crash at all and that's pretty much what i need...

but maybe... someday... if i have a laptop...

Ahh me goes green with envy!!! :sadgreen:

Sounds like a sweet system.. but unfortunatelly.. i only have a PIII 866mhz, Creative TNT v1, and have 512 SD RAM...

tease it :stongue: but it does the job since all is use this is for internet,mp3's and uni... i have no need for games...

Ive got a 20GB hard drive.. ive split the drives 10GB each, 1 for system, and 1 for junk like music and my other stuff... and im thinking maybe put linux on the on other drive...???

Hmmmmm... but i don't wanna install it and then go.. oh .. Video card not working.. or sumthing else not working... cause ive used Linux b4 and its not too bad...

Don't know much about Linux, but that looks really sweet :)

i dualboot xp pro and redhat 9 with kde and blackbox

can't do without xp as i need to run a lot of audio programs, reason for example.

but when i am programming linux is by far the best choice!

btw: bassaholix, i have a 20 and a 120, i've split my 20 into 10gb halfs, one for xp, one for linux, also my pc is only a 600mhz p3 with 256mb ram, tnt2 heh

nice job Rozzer! I've been wanting to convert my box to linux for a good while now. you guys are funny, talking about how crap your computers are. I have a PII 466Mhz, 64Mb ram, built in sound/video etc. MY PIECE OF CRAP CRAPS ALL OVER YOUR PIECES OF CRAP!

But, i'm sure it would run linux. I'd probably need to disable the motherboard sound and video and buy cards for it though, since it's Hewlett Packard built in junk.

I need a new PC so bad.

Linux = mickey mouse OS

it will crash as often or more than WinXP, especially with those fancy but unstable GUIs

Mikey Mouse ? lol, what planet are you on, i think UNIX is more powerfull than windows XP in like a million years , UNIX is like used on all the huge mainframes including / banks / airports / Millatry. I think windows is way unstable and hackable by anyone with a good knowledge, as Linux is Open source everyday patches are out and all free aswell including the OS , unlike Bill Gates charging loads for the software, there aint really a difference from Windows 98 to XP , maybe a securer kernel and Virtual Registry but thats it and cheap start menu, and different boot screen. Windows has just domminated the pc's cuz its easy to use and been there from the beggining. I do use windows XP Pro and ok it works fine, but i dont think its that great.

hahaha linux propaganda got to you, linux is linux (all flavors) and Unix is Unix (all flavors)... they're similar but aren't used in the same places... I don't think military or banks would even consider linux mandrake or any other flavors for critical systems... SCO Unix and some other customized OS servers will do the job. Also doesn't the US military uses windows 2000 in most of their machines? :)

I personnaly work in a highly secure organization and I once stated linux for a non critical server and everyone looked at me as if I came from another planet :D

also, fyi, out of the box, windows xp is more secure than linux red hat out of the box ;)

and for you to state that there's not much difference between 98 and XP/2000/NT means that you don't really know anything about either :) what you guys see is the abstraction on the monitor (gui) and it looks the same, but everything behind it is way different...
