Anti-corporate America ad appeared in New York Times.

Vancouver-based Adbust-ers Media Foundation is behind a full-page, $47,000
US advertisement in Thursday's New York Times that slams corporate America
and U.S. President George W. Bush.

An ominous black spot appears on a mock page of stock market listings. On
the eve of today's U.S. Independence Day celebrations, readers saw this
message to Americans:

"July 4

"Because my country has sold its soul to corporate power

"Because consumerism has become our national religion

"Because we've forgotten the true meaning of freedom

"And because patriotism now means agreeing with the president

"I pledge to do my duty ... and take my country back."

Adbusters founder and publisher Kalle Lasn said Adbusters wanted to run a
hard-hitting political message which looks like it was an "invasion" of the
New York Times.

"By putting that financial background in there, that aesthetically stuns
people and that's exactly what Adbusters and we culture jammers have always
been about," Lasn said in an interview.

He said Adbusters wants readers to challenge what he calls the "arrogant"
foreign affairs policies of the U.S. federal government.

"This ad was an attempt to start giving the people who feel betrayed a
voice, to start a movement against the type of politics that, to a lot of
people, has a fascist edge to it.

"Secondly, it has to do with the raw celebration of military might that
Americans seem to be on at the moment. Thirdly, there's a feeling that
freedom of speech is being suppressed."

Lasn said the ad was placed in Adbusters magazine and on its Web site to
solicit donations to pay for it. The foundation has another $10,000 for TV
time for a similar "black spot" ad, but Lasn said Fox, MTV, CBS, NBC and ABC
have rejected it.

Asked whether Americans have criticized the Canadian-based group in the past
for attacking the U.S. government, Lasn said his response to complaints is:
"What's the problem? At the moment, America is interfering in all our lives
and having a profound effect on the whole planet. If America can invade
Iraq, why can't we invade the New York Times?"

exactly what i was going to do. But, I think that maybe this is a little inappropriate. This is the most patriotic day (besides 9/11) for the Americans, but it has been "defaced". Any other ideas?

YES THEY DID IT!!!

I love these guys!! After some ads on CNN now this!

In the galaxy of quote unquote diverse media we have in the western world, adbusters is a rare case of direct discension against "the system" now in place in the US...
