DJs: Ever get bored of simply beat matching? (pg. 3)

If you can mix in key, you don't HAVE to...IE you can change the key up, and do a few more in the new key and move on.
I think Key matching does make a mix smoother, as WTF are u doing trying to key match if you don't know how to phrase and or beat match....The general progression in my mind is beat match, phrase THEN comes the tricks, such as mashup, accapella's and key matching......(so we agree :P)

Well I find mixing house easier than trance, and I'm not talking about all the technical stuff Sanchez etc do, I'm talking about basic mixing and using an efects unit.
and btw, does everyone know that I'm a chick?? :):) |

I think that when mixing with trance, there is much more of a fine line, as trance tracks vary so much in their eqs. Being able beatmatch is one thing, but being able to master the setting of the eq's depending on what trance you are mixing is what makes perfection.
Whether to mix in only the hi hats first, or the bass, or a mixture of both, depending on the sound of the 2 records is much more of a subtle skill, that makes a hell lot of difference, when trying to achieve that seemless mix.
Of course, you always have to deal with track selection, and also the length of the mix....I love those fast transitions, from one uplifting tune to the next, when a set is in peak time. PUMPING
I do also agree that it can be boring sometimes mixing trance, just after the point where you have got the 2 records beatmatched, and have adjusted the eq's to their right frequency. Have to play the waiting game... there's only so much you can do with trance.
That's why prog and psy is becoming more appealing to mix. The only problem for me is finding some good tune in those genre's...any good suggestions? |

| I can't believe you find it boring...think further than track selection, programming and mixing skills... It's all about the 'journey'....taking people on a journey is what 'trance' is all about.....setting them high and giving them the best feeling through the use of maticulous track selection, use of eq's and even effects (echo, delay and others). That's why Tiesto does so well (IMO) as a DJ as he doesn't restrict himself to one style or genre, he plays various and makes them flow well together. You can change the sound of a track and a set completely when you become one with your music....you can feel all the emotion expressed through the productions and reflect that onto the punters.....I guess I have a deep and emotional attachment to my music. DJing progressive house 'fully' (some prog house is good but prog trance is what I love) will not suit my current tastes....as they say, it's not for everyone but as I mature, my tastes do as well....you never know what I'll be playing next. |

Mikka, couldnt agree more. The EG's are the key to trance. I think mixing different styles helps as well. Thats what I respect about Tiesto so much, the fact that he plays a bit of everything (trance, techno, few breaks mixes of trance tunes etc) I think this changes the pattern of his music and makes his sets that much more enjoyable. Armin is an awesome dj but I think lacks this ability at times and tends to play the same sound (as witnessed in his Melb set earlier this year). Just an opinon though, I dont want to start a huge argument about whose better as they are both in my opinon the worlds best in their genre. |

Maybe i shouldn't have used the word boring. Don't get me wrong, atm uplifting trance is still my favorite genre of music to listen to by far. However, talking mixing wise, I feel that at times, trance can be a little limiting to the amount of tricks and effects you can do.
In terms of layering multiple tracks together, using kill switches, scratching to a certain extent and the trick you see with those DJ's who compete in those Battle mix competitions, there is just so much more to DJing that I feel mixing trance unfortunately does not bring.
That's why i think many people turn to other genre's, which makes it that more bit interesting. |

Totally agree with you there. At first like many, I was a bit disappointed with the direction Tiesto was taking.. but now after gaining a wider appreciation of electronic music in general I now understand and apprecitate what Tiesto is trying to do. Someone who is not affraid to transend genre's...total respect to that!!! |
