DJs: Ever get bored of simply beat matching?

Lately when ive been mixing ive been bored of just simply get the beats matched, gradually bringing it in, and gradually taking out the out going track.

I find my self mixing a lot more progressive, because you can do more interesting stuff with it. Layering tracks on top of each other (to an extent), Adding samples in, and even scratching. Although im not too sure how good any of this sounds at the moment :)

On to the question, what do you guys do while mixing besides beatmatching? Regardless of the genre you mix?

Same really, once you've got the tracks close enough to beatmatched to be able to let em go together for about 16bars or so without getting too much out I around with switching the bass etc, stuff like that, i'll scratch a bit in the cue but not much through the master, as....well, let's be honest, I can't scratch for really :)

Sampling's good fun if you've got the right tracks, or a CDJ.

Something i'm trying 2 do is find 2 tracks 2 "mash-up".....something different.

Trance you can't really do too much more, the way the tracks are strctured they don't allow you to do much more (hard trance is GREAT for doing e over tho [dun worry, i dun like it :P]).

Prog, go for 1-2min mixes...go for phrases of mixing.

Also start key matching your mixes.

There's not really too much more you can do with trance, sometimes I like mixing house.
1. It's much easier to mix than trance
2. You can around with it heaps and no-one will care.

I'll never be able to tell you what key a particular record is in, but through good track selection I know what will work with what and i think that's more important. But you are right, in that a beatmatched mix can still sound ing terrible if there's clashing harmonies.

Same here. There is no way in hell im going to find out the key for all my records, but you just know what works.

well through continuous listening to the same record, you understand the record more and more i guess. You'll will get the hang of what records DON'T and what record DO go with whatever record.

You can always just mix the song out gradually at around the file part of song, at around 56 seconds at 138 BPM. obviously this would be a shorter mix but atleast its not going to clash with any big melodies or anything ;)

Yeah yeah.. Mash-ups are the way to go.. I've been throwing down breaks with prog/tech house to create some cool funky tracks.. Been working on doing a few tracks at home like that and burning the mash-up to cd.. That way I can play it out without worrying about mixing it (cause I like doing whole song mixes, so I have to beat-match in about 15-30 seconds and hold it for like 4-5 minutes.. I can do it sometimes, but don't want to risk a mega-trainwreck when I'm playing out!)

Here's one to play with...

Lamb - Sweet (Lee Coombs Vocal Mix) / Plump DJs - Scram .. They were made for each other, I swear! :D
Teknoscaper.

i dont think its the music thats boring me, the fact that when ive got them matched i stand around and do nothing, if i was playing out maybe i could go hit on girls or something, but the eq knobs != girls :(
