| LiquidX...If you are considering going from a 1Ghz P3 to an 1Ghz Atlon system (Did I read that right?)...you won't see a huge difference in performance...my *only* hangup with AMD is that in the past I have had trouble running certain music programs with an AMD based system....Do you get more Mhz for your $$$, yes...but consider other items in the system that will enhance it's overall performance...memory is a big one...what are you going to use the machine for??? I do heavy duty editing of huge wave files and graphic images, so I have lots and lots of memory and run and UW SCSI hard drive array in my system...I currently run an Intel 700MHZ P3 and blow the doors off most of my friend's PCs...anyway my two cents worth...if you would like me to go into more detail, PM me. |

| WEll, I have 2 choices, the Sony Athlon 1 GHZ, and a Gateway P3 1 Ghz, id be using the PC for all the music and stuff, as well some games, but not into them anyways... and that'll be about it.. and just when I need to do projects, the powerpoint and word, encarta and so on... so I dont use the PC for graphics and such jobs... anyways, Im thinking of getting the Sony athlon since I see ATHLON is much cheaper and better... but I see you had a problem with Mp3's and so on with althlon ??!?! I hope is nothing big though.:p |

Trust me on this, you will not have any such compatibility issues with athlons.
The thing he was talking about applies only to AMD's older generation chips (such as the ones ranging from 100-200 mhz), which did lack in some multimedia processing (such as mp3 decoding). that's in the past... AMD engineered a helluva chip now.
Athlons are rock solid, in the past the companies who made athlon motherboards caused some compatibility issues.. but those were the problem of the motherboards, not the athlons themselves. (some older athlons mobos would screw up with geeforce cards for example) The manufacturers have eliminated the problems in the newer athlon motherboards however, so you shouldnt have any such compatibility issues. |

First think... Where am I going to need it for?
Is it for games --> take a athlon
Is it for calculations/drawing (which counts for me, I use autocad 2000 often) take a P3. Autocad 2000 is optimized for a P3.
Beware if you take a athlon because of heat problems. My brother had a athlon 1333 (or something like that, don't know it for sure) and 2 friends of him have the same pc. And all 3 have heat problems. The processor gets to hot. They have all got superorbs (the perfect cooler for a athlon!!!!) and cooling paste. and still is the processor too hot!!!.
My brother got a new processor because he didn't wan't it to overburn (warenty ofcourse :) ) and he has the same problem. He even build in extra fans for better cooling and it still doesn't work. the temperature is 15 degrees to high. In the beginning without the cooling paste and superorb it was 40 degrees!!
So I would suggest a intel... I've got no problems with it.

ps. no offence to the ppl. who got a athlon :D |

| Aight... well well well... IF anything Id get a warranty for the athlon, and I hope they've got that heating problem fixed... Im suppost to give the report of both PC's to my dad so he could buy it either tonight or tomorrow.... I'll keep checking here if anything comes up, or other suggestions are put.:D Thanx everyone! |

| personaly i think Intel always lie about there Mhz and there benchmarks on there chips....... i have 2 computers one is a 1ghz AMD and 1Ghz Pentium ...and honestly the actual benchmark on the AMD is so much higher then the Pentium...the Pentium isnt a true Ghz its more of a 850mhz level rather then a full Ghz...thats what i noticed |

eh, my non-overclocked athlon 800 is in a mini-case with one cpu fan and the powersupply fan...
bios says it's running at 28-29°C...running cool from what i've heard (ie. upto about 40°C for "hot"). |

| if you dont know, Intel stole AMD technology and code of processors long time ago. thats how the did the first Pentium. |

take the AMD!!! toghether with an kickass AMD or ASUS motherboard!!
AMDs are either easy to overclock without any heating probs or extra fans!!!
i got an Pentium III 600 and my friends AMD Thunderbird 600 is much faster than mine!!!!
happy buying;):D |
