DJ Tiesto - Traffic (pg. 5)

This has been my favorite track of the year since I first heard it at the TMF Awards and I still cannot get enough of it. Tiesto proves his genius once again, and gives us yet another example of why he's in another level standing way apart from Armin, Ferry and the rest of the melodic/epic trance dj + producer crowd.
Whoever says that this track sounds familiar to something else and therefore is not original, get a clue and get a grip. Better yet, listen to any symphonic march from Wagner, Grieg, Berlioz, Shostakovich or any of the great classical exponents of "evil" (but always melodic) grandiose 4/4 music and you'll understand a bit where Tiesto is coming from. The melody is of course a basic martial harmonic progression, simple yet totally effective. This is the 21st century, thinking in terms of coming up with new melodies is pretty reactionary and should not be the purpose of edm. The magik lies in taking this martial symphonic feeling to electronic dance music for the first time and giving it justice in the dancefloor. Tiesto's layering, depth, nuances and subtle buildup and cadences is insane. His use of the Access Virus (preset sounds or whatever) is fascinating as well. This is some really unique trance here, and something I'm proud to call art as well . :D |

Truly a great track, but that's a separate issue from the fact that most of the best productions he's involved with are produced in association with other people (e.g. Theme from Norefjell, No more tears, endless wave, etc). Traffic could also be produced with another artist, but no credit is given in the production alias (as is the case with Magik Journey, Suburban Train, Norefjell etc.). We won't know until we look at the small print on the back of the vinyl cover if this is a solo production, or a collaboration. My point is he should give more credit to the other producers who help him out. Many of the other producers/remixers on his label have as much (or more) talent than he does, but get very little credit...

But it's so obvious that Tiesto is the artistic and musical mastermind behind all of those classics. He's the constant, the greatest common factor. As I've said many times before, Tiesto obviously is not the most talented guy playing around with computers, gadgets and synths, even he admits that. He uses an engineer or some other collaborator as a tool, an instrument and a vehicle to aid and improve his expression. He always gives credit when credit is due, the engineer does not contribute to the music or structure, he just works on sound, which makes him an instrument and not an artist/producer. Of course collaborating with knowledgeable people such as his engineer or Gert or Cor or Ferry or Kid Vicious or Junkie XL makes his sound quality better. Just as much as a $1 million Stradivarius violin will make any virtuoso sound better, but that doesn't make the virtuoso any less of an artist or genius. I'm one of those that believe Ligaya is a mediocre track and the other Gouryellas are genius, yet some people here want to downplay Tiesto's role in those tracks, when his trademark is what makes the tracks so special. I could say that about pretty much any of the great tracks that bear his name, Tiesto's artistic innovation and musical depth is what makes them stand apart. But this is just my perspective.....so whatever. :toothless |

but judging from the 8 and 4 MB versions, i figure the 8 mb is the album one and the 4 the radio edit..

Really Phat Tune!! Heard it first @ TMF Awards opening... then at Tiesto In Concert (I went APE !) and also @ Sensation I went totally nuts!!!!!!!!
The remix is even better though imo :)
