| I'm trying to decide between the ipod and the zen, and i was wondering...... what is the difference in sound quality between the two? yes, I did hear that the ipod is better, but how much better? is it worth the extra money, or is it something that i will barely notice? |

| Its all an electronic signal and the sound quality will be based on the quality of the mp3 file. The player will only vary on how user friendly it is, size and price. |

yea i heard the IPOD is great. My roomate has it and he says the thing is almost indestructable like a brick although i wouldnt try it.
I was on the market to buy a nice mp3 player myself but then i discovered some cd players that can also play mp3s. I thought this was badass cuz i wasnt to excited about the 125 meg cards that some mp3 players use because my trance/techno mp3s will fill that up fast. True, its great to carry your tunes in your pocket with the mp3 player, but i didnt mind carrying a cd player around as long as i was able to fill a whole cdr with several hundred mp3s.
And also, if you get a car kit for your cd player, you basically have an mp3 player in your car too. Dunno what the sound quality is but thats a whole new topic. :) |

Two topics really: what mp3 player do you want to walk around with and what do you want to store music on so you can play it on a stereo / in a car etc
For the standalone, I have only used the iPod. Seems ok. But I am not used to Macs anymore and don't like the interface. If you are in school and use a Mac, go for the iPod, otherwise I like the Zen.
For the walkaround I go by principle; it must be small, rechargable (because they eat batteries like crazy) and use third party software to upload (because they are hardware companies and can't make software if their lives depend on it (wait a sec, their lives do depend on it)) I have had a Nomad, a Bantam and a Rio. The best by far is the Rio. Made by SonicBlue which, in some weird twist of fate, filed Chapter 11 the day after I bought it. I bought a 128 MB which I expanded to 384 and can store about 90 songs in 96kbps
The bantam was a good lesson for me in what can go wrong. Nice little player but with no third party support, I was stuck using their software. I had to know the filenames of the songs I wanted to upload and pretty much do it one by one.
The other thing I would warn against in principle is encrption software like on the Panasonic. 1) it is a pain in the ass to deal with and 2) let's discourage companies from doing this - for tranceaddicts especially - at least until you can find PvD and Armin as easily as madonna and brittany
Well that is my 2 cents |

| tc-fan, thats the old ipod you have in your pic. Why don't you show the new one, which is even smaller. Its only fair, if your making comparisons.:toothless |

| ... what about the interface of the zen? it seems like the screen is rather small, is it easy to find songs; play around with it? |

you learn how to manipulate it in NO time. It's very user friendly and it has nice features like being able to cue songs without having to stop the song you're playing. It also boasts an EAX audio system, which is an on-board sound enhancement program. You can do great things with it like hear the music in different environments (i.e. auditorium, small room, indoor arena, etc.) You can also play around with the spacialization of the music, and the track speed, volume leveling, and you have an equalizer that you can control. and the screen size is something you don't have to worry about. |

that sounds awesome, thanks for the help... now let's see if i can find a good deal; i was thinking about the ipod for a long time, but the price is kinda steep for the storage size, and the zen has always been a second option, which now seems more and more appealing. is there going to be something new on the market any time soon that can make the zen's price go lower, or just time? (make it even less expensive than it already is, i know... ) |
