Grrr hardware problem

Ok so as of late, my computer has been acting like . If I restart my computer, while it's on, it works fine. However, if I turn the computer completely off and then start it up again, it does not boot up. It does not load the windows or bios screen or anything. The monitor is not even activated and remains in standby mode thinking the computer is off. The busy light simply stays on for 10 seconds then the computer stops thinking. So whenever I turn the computer completely off, I usually have to turn it off and on again and again for about 15-20 times before it actually boots up properly. Any ideas? Thanks.

tried clearing the bios (aka clearing the cmos)

also do you know what motherboard, cpu, video card and psu are in there?

While it is open get one of those cans of air and blast the dust out of your machine. If the heating up is a problem that can help since the dust restricts airflow and works as an insulator.

sounds the most probable cause, open the case, see if you cpufan is going round. Also, when you've got the case open, have a lookie on the motherboard for blown cap's. If any have dark /dirty tops then your mobo is well and truley on it's way out, that's my suggestion neways.

I'm fairly certain it is not a cooling problem since I've had the case open/computer shut off for several hours/and have hardware monitoring cpu temp and graphics card temps and nothing seems abnormal. The computer just randomly picks and chooses when it wants to do a normal boot regardless of whether the computer is warm or cold. Oh yes, and I made sure that my cpu and graphics card fan were working.

Since I built my comp about 6 months ago I don't think dust is a serious problem. At any rate, I had used those high pressure dusters to clean it even more but that didn't seem to help. I just installed the latest version of my motherboard bios but that failed to do anything either.

Anyway here are my comp compenents if that helps any:

Asus P4/PE motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 / 2.4BGHz Northwood 512K Socket 478 Processor 533MHz
MSI Ti4200-VTD8X GeForce 4 Titanium 4200 DDR/SDRAM 128MB 8X AGP CARD
250W or 300W Power supply (not quite sure ... I'm at work)

At any rate, I haven't checked to see if there are any blown caps on my motherboard, but the motherboard does seem to be the culprit.

hmm imo looking at those specs that psu may be to blame - too much workload, esspecially if you're running more than 2 ide devices - a cpu and graphics card of that calibre should have a bigger psu.. is the monitor running off the psu also, or does it have a seperate power source? First off i'd suggest replacing the psu with something of a higher rating, if that fails then yeh, as you suggested the mobo is to blame.

The monitor has a different power source but you might be right. I'll try a different psu .... thanks!

Could be dirty over the contacts of the video card or memory sticks, try using a eraser over the contacts, blowing off the dirty then connecting again. Having a bad case, could be bad contact over the video card and the mobo caused by the distance over the two boards. Iīve got the two probs a little time ago, when some contacts works and others donīt, the bios might not beep indicating the prob

I'm pretty certain it is not the contacts on the video card or memory sticks. I used to think the problem originated from those two components so I switched to an older video card/older memory with no luck. I'm beginning to think it is the PSU or Motherboard. But then why does it work on the occassional 10th or 15th attempt on power up?

it can be, try changing the PSU if you can find other for testing, if it doesnīt work, maybe its the voltage regulator of the mother board

get a name brand PSU. it is worth the extra cost of buying it. you will get more power at different loads than some cheapass noname/generic brands. you might have too much equipment for the psu to handle now. i have a 550 psu and all the plugs( 3 hds, 1 cdrw, 1 radeon, 8 fans) are used up and no probles
