Sluggish under Win2000 with NTFS

Well i did a format and clean install of win2k with an NTFS partition. I notice now that everything is bloody slow especially executing programs around the OS. Renaming files is sluggish as well as listing the file system.

Im pretty sure win2k is slow because of this ty NTFS. Even though people say NTFS is faster i think its total bull:rolleyes:

Anyways, does anyone know how to make the system go faster besides reformatting with FAT32?

my system is: two 120gb HD WD cavier, 256MBram, 2.4GHZintel

thanks

what kind of pc do u have?

NTFS is a little bit slower than FAT32, but it has other advantages... dunno which exactly :toothless, but you can look it up.

But a little more info on your setup would be helpfull. (IDE config and such)

What motherboard is it?

You tried runing defrag on the drive? right click on the drive in my computer, select properties, then click the tools tab, then defragmentation.

Also if you right click on the drive in my computer and just goto the properties, un-tick the "allow indexing to make searchs faster" unless you use the search feature loads (i leave this disabled)

If its a intel chipset motherboard (nearly all of the current desktop boards out there are), you can check in the motherboards manual, download and install these utitilies (the 2 are different its the way the forums puts the ...'s in to save space!!):

If the links dont work lemme know!

get atleast 512 ram if u plan to multitask. i have 1 gig and no problems running lots of programs and no slow down. have u try to load less program on startup? sometimes useless program load to take./waste your precious memory.

Im running a gigabyte mobo, dont remember the model #.

Okay, i unticked the "allow indexing..." and installed the intel app accelerator from the link.

I dont really need 512 mb ram. I occasionally multitask heavily, but not very often so most of the time its internet or MS word.

Im gonna reboot and see if..

Great, it seems good now. Dunno if its was the disabling "allow indexiing..." that fixed it or the intel app, but its all good now.

Thanks all
jon
both made a difference, but the intell application would have made more of a difference :)

NTFS has higher security encryption and faster seek times. It also allows higher drive volumes that FAT won't support. Glad to see I'm learning something in school! haha
