| usually movies such as this one.... i absolutely love... maybe my expectations were extrememly high for it.. but i loved how they embarked on the culture.. the main actress ... i thought.. was extremely hot. i dont know what was lacking.. but something was..... maybe i should watch again.. perhaps not |

was definitely a good movie. If someone asked me why, they wouldn't understand.
I appreciate it, because its one of those simple movies, far from mainstream, that take place in a location other than a hollywood set/location. Soundtrack is fair as well. I love to travel, and fully understand culture shock, as it can be hard, and hearing an american female voice, or just english alone is a great sound all in itself. There's something nice about being so far away from home, with everything being different, yet at the same time, to have familiar things around.
Its what makes hotels so nice to stay in. :D |

Stop the freaking overhype ! :p
I tend to always be dissapointed when people over hype things to no extent, ex Office space " best movie ever " blah blah that stuff totally puts me off.
Well with this movie I must say it did deliver; but only to some extent.
Story is original and you do feel like you are genuinely lost ( in the sense that you're in the actors place, overseas, confused without connection to the local area ) I must give it credit for that. The movie had such an airy feel with great little stories that make it well worth it.
I was also pleased to see that the movie didn't go the easy way of letting both of the main actors get 'together'; That would have been poor taste and so cheap feel, FFS That would have been like a father screwing his daughter.
The filming on the other hand I give it an average/nearly down grade in certain shots. I better understood why such was the case after viewing the dvd extra features, one of the interviews states that number of locations were "stolen". Some shots taken inside a starbucks for example, all well setup, but at the end of the pan .... camera gets shaked ( shoulder mounted :S ) .. makes it a good shot gone amateur.
The movie overall delivers in it's context, but in the final outcome you can only feel like you were built-up torwards NOTHING :haha: . I guess that's to be expected because the movie maintains this sweet innocent feel.
I guess I give it 8.5/10
The dvd on the other hand was poor in delivering the goods. Lack of producer commentary, extra features quite minimal. This is somewhat similar to Sophia Coppola's other movies ( like virgin suicides, just about the same extra type of features or more like the lack of ).
In conclusion I must admit I do think Sofia's really one to look out for in the future. |

| Great film, I really liked it ! A friend of mine said (and I totally agree with him ) that Japan is a background in this movie. If the story would be situated in Brazil or Russia:p or elsewhere only little parts would be different. |

Anyone else think the lead actress looked bugged out on drugs the whole time?

I just saw this movie, and I thought it was incredible. I can't recommend this enough. The last scene alone is worth the price of a ticket. If I had to describe this movie in one word (and I don't know why I would), it would be, pure. What a beautiful experience.

Couldn't agree more; I absolutely loved this movie. |

What the?
I think I saw the AD for this movie...
Bill Murray right?
It was one of those ads where they didnt explain anything about the movie... didnt say anything about it at all.
so it was a good movie then? :conf:

well, even though it was a weird ad i do remember laughing my ass off because all of a sudden it cut to a scene of an asian chick saying something about her pantyhose :stongue: |
