Hey All TOTAs,I moved down to Alexandria, VA for a one year internship about a month ago, and I'm feeling quite homesick....
nothing beats Canada I must say, I know the US is not too far away but its just a totally different place, there is a feeling of insecurity, and not because of "terrorists" but just the way the country is....
For example, my first time into a bank, I witnessed a robbery where the guy snatched $700 from over the counter and took off in a Benz....my question is why do u steal $700 if you drive a Benz? or maybe its stolen too!!!
Another is seeing 6 cop cars parked on the side of the street arresting someone for God knows what, and oh yeah, cops cops everywhere!
My first night here I met (he found me!) a guy who just spent 10 years in jail, and he was asking for directions and wondering why people wont help him....here is a tip, dont tell them you just got out of jail!!!:eyespop: :nervous:
The news here is ridiculous where all channels spend 5 minutes talking about J.Lo and Ben Afleck breaking up and yet hardly no mention of whats going on the world...
I know I'm rambling, so I'll stop.....I'm glad im not here permanently, and I don't I'd ever wanna be!!!!
and another thing I miss, the de-crim of marijuana :D

| Try and make the best of your time there! (I know, it seems easier said than done.) Get all you can out of this experience, and before you know it, you'll be right back in good old Ontario. :) |

what's a natural Canadian .. ?
btw. the birth rate is dropping in Canada which means that without immigrants the overall population of this country would be on the decline. We need immigration in order to help support the aging population in this country. But i guess you might see it a little differently .. |

as compared to what? A natural American? Aren't all Canadians and Americans immigrants in the long run ANYWAY? Immigrants bring money into the economy, it just makes for good business. Canada being full of "immigrants" is just racist talk in my eyes.. |

Hopefully you're just talking the ignorant ones that don't feel they have to make a change (ie. our laws) when they arrive?
I don't mind people who bring their culture with them, in fact I love it.
But it's the ones who feel they don't have to adjust to Canada and decide to live in their own little world that bug me...
Anyways man, I feel your pain cause I don't think I could do it either.
And I thought they were paranoid before 9-11...(see "Bowling for Combine" and you'll see exactly what I mean)
Hang in there!! :tongue2 |

| to "adjust to Canada" means what exactly? See it's interesting becuase i'm taking a class on this very exactly idea. Becuase we believe in having such a diverse and multicultural state, do you think it hinders the promotion of national unity in Canada? |

well i didnt mean to be racist but some of them shouldnt be here, like u said, the ones who decide to live on their own and isolate themselves from others. also the ones who create gang groups just bcuz thier from a special country, and the ones who just try to represent too much about their culture without knowing anything about their own culture. i hope this makes sense. im not really good at english. im like tieso, hehe. |

"adjust" could mean something as simple as learning to speak English to as far reaching as assimilating with the rest of society ..
to everyone it's going to mean something different. Jeff what's your definition .. ? :D |
