You must see traffic as a one off shot.I just made it for fun to play during my djsets.The reaction of the crowd was so phenominal that I decided to release that track.
.Also to make a statement that I won’t compromise with my music.While most trance producers try to get in the charts with cheesy vocals and boring sounds I try something different.It’s indeed a dark track but on the other hand it’s a quit happy melody as well that sticks in your head.The music I produce is very diverse as you notice and I will produce an album with lots of different styles on there.My mix of adagio for strings is melodic,so is nyana,traffic is not.i like all three of them.
In the last two years you became famous all over the world, become the worlds best dj and won every award you can think of. Tiësto is a name that everyone knows, even baby’s are named after you. At the moment you’re in big publicity, making music for tv commercials, doing some charity, if you got enough votes we even can see you on dutch tv (again) and you have fans all over the world. You could call it a hype!

I don’t feel that hype because I am away a lot and don’t read to many papers or watch internet.I think a lot of media is just grabbing everything they can to use my name because it makes them look cool.
I don’t like to be in publicity when its about Tijs.As tiesto you can’t escape from it.

I don’t think so,maybe on some party’s where I play.A lot of people come to watch instead of dance which is strange sometimes.But,Ithis is mostly in Holland .In other country’s in the world I am a famous dj,in Holland I am a famous celeb which can make some gigs a bit strange.
Don't you ever had any problems with you ears because you're listnening the whole day too loud music? Since i'm dj-ing i sometimes have pain in my ears and i have to stop for a few hours, don't you ever have that? And what are you trying to avoid it?

I do have some troubles with my ears sometimes but in general they are still good.I always try to put the monitor not too loud and wear earplugs before and after loud gigs.
I want to ask you about your watch!i observed it at decadence in thessaloniki 14/2/2003 and in decadence summer in thessaloniki 12/9/2003!the colour is silver!what type is it?

What was the main idea behind tracks like (Sub)urban Train, Lethal Industry and Magik Journey for example? But also, what is the main idea behind your new tracks Nyana and Traffic. There must be some kind of inspiration needed to create such wonderful tracks??

I consider my tracks as paintings.Sometimes I am in a melodic mood like magik journey or urban train and sometimes I like to make energetic techtracks like flight and traffic.Every track I make has to have it’s own identity,that’s important to me.
I am into astrology, and using your birthday, 17 January 1969, in Breda, I found that you are a Capricorn with your Mercury (Mind) in Aquarius, the best place for it to be, and Venus (Heart / Art and Music) in Pices, again the best place for it to be. Those are both in an exalted position which means they are perfectly placed, and have a lot to do with emotions and you wanting to express your feelings to everyone else, to better them. Would you agree with these findings and find them actually rather interesting?

in your early days of clubbing, you say sven vath was an influence on you, do u still listen to him, and is he still an influence music wise as u are playing alot of good techno recently, or is this montana's help, also what was your thoughts on the berlin love parade?, again techno influenced.

Sven Vath was an inspiration when he was in his trancy days.I haven’t heard him play since but I respect him a lot because he also loves djing.He is always fanatic in playing on party’s and he is one of the most underestimated DJ’S around.I’ve always played some techno in my sets,even on my first magik cd there were technotracks like silent breed.I just like to combine trance with techno because if you play only just one kind of sound the whole night it can be boring.I loved the gig I did in the columbiahallen .The love parade itself was fun but for djing not so nice because I was struggling with the equipment
Do u decide where and when ur booked or does it end up being random according to ur manager??? Of course u dreamt about being a dj superstar because I myself dream about it also but did u ever really think it was gonna be as big as u have it??? Obviously ur family is proud of what u've accomplished but...do u ever miss being with ur family and friends??? or the other way around??? Or have u become used to it by now??

I always decide myself what I do and where I play.I don’t have a manager.I am very down to earth and the whole superstar status doesn’t mean much to me.The only good thing about that is that it’s always packed where I play and that I get invited to play on the best party’s around the world.
My family is very proud of me and they have always been very supportive.
My mum lives very close to me so I see her all the time.
I'm from San Francisco California and noticed you had a contest for producers in Holland...why don't you have a contest for trance/house producers all over the world so us producers here in Frisco can enter? I was dissapointed that I could enter your last one.

You can always send me stuff and I will listen.But I only reply when it’s a good track.The reason why you can’t enter is because I won the price of 10000 euro’s which came from the dutch music scene.I want to give this money back to the dutch scene to help young dutch producers.

I play in australia from the 23rd of December and will be finishing in Perth on new years day.After that I go touring in Australia for three weeks as a tourist.
I also got a question for you. It's not really about you as a DJ (for a change), but more about you as a person. We all know from your interviews that, in some cases, you don't have any influence on certain things in your career. Like the clip from suburban train, which you don't exactly like, or the entire celebrity status which gets pushed in your face sometimes. You were afraid of what other people might turn you into once you got famous, I once heard. It must be hard sometimes to keep hearing you aren't doing as expected (the entire commercialism topic) from the critics AND the fans. My question: how does this affect you as a person (and a DJ)? What are your views about that? Do you think you did some things in your career which you aren't exactly proud of (certain gigs) but couldn't do anything about?

I think it’s very hard to please everybody and the only thing I can do is give the best of myself.When I play or when I produce I always follow my heart and never listen to anyone.So I am interested in critical notes but I always know where I am standing.I know when I played a good set and when I release a good track no matter what people say.

I don’t think so,I just made that for the advert of coca cola.I always wanted to produce a track for the cola brand,I think that’s a cool thing to do.It will never be released as a tiestorecord because I don’t think it really is.

Ofcourse I would love to be the number one in 2004.I don’t think people like me because of that,I think they like the gigs and the music,not because I am a number.
I noticed that at different gigs you use different headphones - Sony, Stanton etc.. Do you have a contract with those headphone companies, or do you just randomly pick different set of headphones for different gigs ?

I don’t have a contract for my headphones,I used to like the sony one but it’s a pretty heavy one.I use the Stanton a lot because it’s lighter and has a great sound.But sometimes I throw my headphones into the crowd and then I have to borrow one from another DJ.
The thing i want to ask you is witch was the event that touch you more in your heart and the memories will stay forever to you!A second thing i will like to ask is how you are feeling when you are playing infront of a greek audience?

That was not just one event.I had many experiences and to just name one would be not right.I played in Greece a couple of weeks ago and I had an awesome time.Abolutely fabulous crowd,aswell in Athens as in Thessaloniki.

Yeah that’s a great idea.Maybe we can do a party in Amsterdam and on the forum people can send me a list of requests from the early days till now and I will play all those requests that night.I will think about this idea if people like it…

I would always work in the music industry,maybe as a tourmanager for somebody else or as a full time producer.
Black Hole recordings and the Magik Musik label are growing dramatically and the Tiesto icon is being commercialized, is this kind of pressure affecting you as a Producer/DJ?

I don’t agree that the label grew that much.I think we release less records now then we did a year ago.Only top quality will be released on our labels,stuff from mark Norman,choopie,Ton tb.I don’t think it’s really commercial.If I would be commercial I wouldn’t release a track like traffic but would come out with a cheesy vocal track right?
Why don't you ever post on the tiesto.com forums? do you read them?

I come up with the melody and the idea which I produce in the black hole studio,when that’s finished we work on the track together and he is mixing the track down.So I guess that’s 65% me and 35% him?
My question is....how would a broken limb affect your career in regards to producing and touring? Any tips on how to get around such a problem for an amateur like myself?

yeah,I guess it would effect my career temporarely.I played a couple of weeks with a bad foot.I sat on a chair when I was djing then which was pretty strange.
My question is this I just got some turntables used TECHNICS SL-1200MK2 and I wanted to know what's ur method on timing the records I've been having a tough time with that.

I don’t really have a method,it’s just a matter of listening to the records.I find it harder to mix cdr’s,I still make mistakes sometimes when I mix cdr’s.With records no problems.

Well,the adagio mix is on the dvd TIC and the radiohead will never be released because I made it exclusive for my own djsets to play.You can download the radiohead off my essentialmix I did on radio 1 on the 7th august.
Where do you buy your clothing? Do you borrow it from shops? i have seen spin you a couple of times and see you on the dvd/clips, but you wear ever time different clothing (@tic a couple times). mostly a like what you wear (your style)

When you arrive at a gig and the fans there is not up for new tunes, what is the best rule to follow? Do you play old and new or just go with the crowd? Or do you do what you do best and make them pay attention?

I think you must never forget the crowd where you play for and if they wanna hear old tunes they can get them,as long as I have them with me that is.I don’t always fill inn requests but if it’s an original one or a big tune I will always try to fitt it in

Hello, my name is nate. i am staying in korea right now as an english teacher and i love it here in asia. the scene here is one of the best i have ever seen. it is very personal the clubbers are real nice and loyal and there are no drugs, no fighting basicly a great vibe all around. in the past few years we have started to see some of the bigger names visiting seoul because the electronic music scene here is realy blowing up.. but i was wondering if you would be interested in visiting asia.. specificly seoul, the capitol of south korea. i think you would really enjoy playing here cuz the people are very nice alll smiles and all about the music. anyway just i am realy curious to know if we might could expect to see you in the future. if you are interested please email me and i would be more than happy to introduce the top promoters over here.

Hi tijs i have been wondering for some time why you have not been back to Slinky in Bournemouth.I think the last time you were there was march 2002.I know you used to like this night because in your magik 5 cd you thank the fans from slinky bournmouth.This is my local club and its a shame u have not been back lately as this is the first place i saw u,4 years ago.I know slinky has a bad name with dj's and marco v has recently had problems with them,so please could u let me know why it is.Thanks.

I don’t have any problems playing slinky.I don’t think they have a bad name,it’s just that I have been very busy and I only do one gig on a night.I used to do more gigs on the same night and then it was easier to plan Slinky in but nowadays I feel I want to put all my energy in one gig instead of deviding it.
I was just wondering what would be your perfect setting for a set you would love to spin, would you have it indoors in an arena or outdoors? what time of day? what country? and infront of how many people?

I have played on every hour of the day at least once and it doesn’t really matter to me.I love special things but the most important are the people I play for.If the crowd is great and the gear is quality,no bouncing deck and stuff,then I am happy to play whenever,wherever!!
What I wonder is, that you meet so many people/fans through all over the world. Probably all those people say they are your biggest fans, want to take a picture, autographs etc. etc.. Don't you ever get tired of these people? for example when you have a busy schedule and you want to go to your bed insted of talking with fans etc. Probably I can guess your answer, but do you even realize you are some sort of a god to some people and that in some cases people don't dare to speak to you, because your are their superstar? And how do you think of the efforts that some people do to see you play? (f.e. long travel times etc. etc.)

I am very aware of my fans and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them so I always try to make time for them.Sometimes this is not possible because of my schedule and I have to say no to a picture or something,but…..this rarely happens.
so will there be another TIC ??? If yes, when is the plan to have it ??? And if it will give another time, where will it be ??? Again in Arnhem ???

I am touring through Asia and South America next year so I won’t be back soon.It is still one of my favourite clubs in the world though!
If someone would ask you you to play somewhere on a party, unknown, undercover, just a stupid little party, you just would get the usual stuff like all the other unknown dj's ... some free drinks, some free tickets and stuff. Back to the roots, like we say. No other famous dj's in the line-up, not even your name on the flyers. Just like you started once ... Would you do it? Or wouldn't you? And why not? And don't say it's your job and you have to to earn some money...

I think that’s way to early to say.At this moment I am just producing tracks to play when I am djing and when I have enough I will release a new album,I guess after the summer of next year maybe?
A small question from a Dutch man, what are in your opinion the 10 records every DJ should have when he or she is going to spin at a party this weekend?

I think every dj should bring his own produced biggest tracks to every gig plus his favorite tunes which fit in his own style of music. It doesn’t really matter which records you are playing as long as the whole line of your set is clear and touches the crowd.

I played last Saturday in my hometown on the main square in the centre. It was an awesome experience for me,a moment I will never forget! This is where I started djing so that made it very special.
How do you feel about the way MANY fans who have followed you for so many years are upset how you seem to be going to mainstream with such endorsements as Coca Cola and the such, in other words many loyal fans have seen you go from nothing to this superstar pop icon and feel they have been somewhat abandoned along the way and do not feel as in touch with you anymore...how do you respond to this?...

Ok, I am very sorry that I haven’t respond on the forum earlier but I didn’t know and I didn’t realize that there was so much need for the answers on these questions. But now I do know, I’ll definitely make more time for it. For example chat session will be held in the near future. The reason why I did the coca cola commercial is that when I was looking to that brand when I was a kid I always liked it. I was honored that they asked me to make the music for the commercial so that’s why I did it. They didn’t even give me money for that and the track will never be released so what’s the big deal? I don’t feel I have changed as a person and also musically i still feel strong connected. That I am on the radio all the time is not my fault. A song like traffic isn’t that commercial is it? I am always there for my fans after or before a gig, I am never arrogant or rude so I don’t really know what you mean. The only thing I can agree with you on is the fact that I need to make more time for my website which I will do from now on. |

my gosh, do people ever ask deejays intelligent questions or just simply ask dumbass questions and ass kiss. Pathetic questions really...some of the answers are half ass, I mean tiesto made traffic out of another song, urban train was basically borrowed, obesession was 90% junkie xl...why don't people ask him...where does he find all these samples...and about his engineer, I always viewed it as 50-50....then again....why did'nt people ask tiesto why he suddenly changed his mixing style..from effort to half ass....people that have followed him for years will realize this....friends of mine tried to get it asked....but it was not. Then again, you rarely get deejays being honest about things, like the true split of gouryella...but when deejays do interviews...you do get a tremendous view into their lives.....but I just wished the questions were better....not when are you coming back to my country? then again...it is not a perfect world. |

I totally agree. Of course he picks the questions he answers so it might not be too easy to get answers like that out of him.

Interesting.
I find the idea of an engineer rather stupid. I mean Tiesto isn't doing any of the gritty parts of production - I thought to be a true producer you should be responsible for producing the track fully.
And also, what's he on about when he says he didnt realise his forum community was so big? I find it very suprising he'd assume that there were only a small number of visitors to his site- he must of had a more accurate idea. |

I'd like to know the answer to that too, but I wouldn't ask it. For one thing, the mods of that website edit anything negative you say about Tiesto. I used to be a member, but quit some time ago.
He's right though about varying his sets. If you just play trance the whole time that's sooooo boring. :rolleyes:

Ok, I am very sorry that I haven’t respond on the forum earlier but I didn’t know and I didn’t realize that there was so much need for the answers on these questions. But now I do know, I’ll definitely make more time for it. For example chat session will be held in the near future. The reason why I did the coca cola commercial is that when I was looking to that brand when I was a kid I always liked it. I was honored that they asked me to make the music for the commercial so that’s why I did it. They didn’t even give me money for that and the track will never be released so what’s the big deal? I don’t feel I have changed as a person and also musically i still feel strong connected. That I am on the radio all the time is not my fault. A song like traffic isn’t that commercial is it? I am always there for my fans after or before a gig, I am never arrogant or rude so I don’t really know what you mean. The only thing I can agree with you on is the fact that I need to make more time for my website which I will do from now on. |
