I took a look at this club246 thing and if it is true that they'll be taking over the radio show:

club246's CEO and the VPs are DJs who have played on globalgroove before. Maxx Sholz / Paul de Engineer probably went into CHIN, presented them with a business plan on how to capitalize on the airplay, a plan to agressivly market the show and give it broader exposure (thus the possibility of gov't culture grants). I get mo

I don't know if GlobalGroove has done any of the above (they probably have) -- and possibly Sholz/de Engineer were frustrated with how GlobalGroove is run and they (Sholz/de Engineer) had a plan to improve the overall show - which globalgroove wasn't interested in.

I think as long as Sholz/de Engineer keeps the ship (business) running tight then hopefully things will be just as good (if not better).

i dunno man... this whole thing is phuked.
i'm still disapointed.

Fir3Start3r> No I was not one of the producers on GGN however I do know a few of them and they all lost their shows with this new Club246 takeover.
CHIN knows that they could not have cancelled Global Groove without being bombarded by e-mails and phone calls. So what they did is cancel global groove and put in Club246 which will play CDs for a while untill things settle down. That's when they'll totally cancel ALL Electronic music programming.

THIS IS WHY WE NEED EVERYONE TO WRITE THE LETTERS! The more letters the better the chances they will listen!

Some of my friends and I each wrote a letter to the editors of all major newspaper to encourage them to cover the story of how this hurts the dance music scene in Toronto. Here is a copy of that letter;

Dear Editor,

About 5 years ago one of the major newspapers here in Toronto ran a story on The Global Groove Networks. An overnight radio programming broadcasted on CHIN 100.7FM.
The programming was directed at the growing Dance music culture in Toronto which is not covered by any other radio station in Toronto.

For six years this programming united many people around their radio receivers into the early morning hours. Friday (Speptember, 26th 2003) however this stopped as CHIN Radio decided to drop the programming, fully produced by volunteers in favour of pre-recorded mixed CDs.

I believe it would be a good idea for your newspaper to cover the story of how this hurts the Dance Music scene, as now there is no original radio programming for them (us) to turn to. Many of us will now turn to downloading music and turn away from listening to the radio.

Fearing this the community has started a letter writing campaign to CHIN radio to bring this programming back. I am currently aware of over 200 e-mails and many more phone calls that were received by the CHIN management staff.

You can track the progress of the fight on all Major Dance Music message boards linked from this page: http://www.purephunk.com/gg.html

For more info on the Global Groove Networks please check out http://www.globalgroovenetworks.com

I hope your newspaper will find space for this story which does affect a great population of the GTA.
Thank you in advence and please do not hasitate to contact me, if you require more information;

Sincerely,

I encourage each of you to do so as well, the more coverage the better. Here is a list of editor e-mail addresses for all the major newspapers in Toronto:

I think the Only way we can get a Pure electronic music radio station in TO is to do it Steaming over the Internet Only. As much as we Love our music, we will never have our own Radio station to run it on. We got the CRTC telling us we need to play 30% Canadian Content (or is it more/ less dunno fo' sure). Unless we get that many Canadians that produce their own Electronic music (and stuff like Joey and Boomtang Boys does not count) we can forget it. Someone needs to get a great WEbserver going with good streaming Internet Radio or we need to start petitioning to get the CRTC Rules Changed. I Do feel a bit discriminated that I can not hear my favourtite Tunes in Prime Time because of the CRTC. Also even if a Station was asked to play it here I think that they would denounce it and stay "Oh, there is no Market for that here". I think we can get enough sponsors to make an ALL electronic music Radio station. We got enough Vinyls shops, promoters, clubs and Alcohol Companies that would sponsor such a thing. Just the Damn CRTC is in the way.

It really is pathetic how far behind Canada is in recognizing the potential in promoting dance music on the radio. Compared to Europe and even Australia now which has a few stations dedicated to livesets etc. the closest we come (and this is really sad) is like 103.5 :(

Here we are fighting to keep alive a great show that's on at hours when most people are sleeping and they're killing that as well. The truth is that there would be a ton of support for a real electronic music station but the CRTC fails to recognize that and instead floods our airwaves with such "quality" stations as JACK FM and the other 150 crap soft rock, country and all talk radio stations. It truly is a sad state of affairs here. Now the local community station abruptly yanks Global Groove off its roster of shows for what reason? None that would satisfy any of its longtime listeners.

Granted Canada will probably never reach the level of the likes of the BBC's Radio 1, Holland's ID-T Radio or even Nova969 in Australia, but at the very least we could hope that one station in this miserable city would wake up and give a show like Global Groove a REAL chance in a PROPER time slot to pilot it for even a few months and see how it does. I think the proof would be undeniable that Toronto absolutely needs a bigger and heavier dose of electronic music on the radio waves. One that promotes our local talent and hosts international talent when they come to perform. I mean its stupid that we get all these great international DJs coming here but we never get to hear them do an interview or spin a warmup set prior to their gig. Yet all around the world that's part of the tour. I think we all know how well that would go over with our community and that there would be a great demand for something like that.

actually a 24 hours dance music station is in the works and has been for over 3 years. The problem is not the CRTC and the Canadian Content limits as that can be meat quite easily with artisits such as Jelo and Hatiras producing locally but the lack of free frequencies on the FM dial.

The FM dial has become so clogged in Toronto with stations all playing the same thing. That the CRTC has stopped issuing licenses for new broadcast stations.

All is not lost however as digital Radio or DAB is becoming more and more popular. There is some room still aveilable on the Digital Radio dial and chances are that that is where you are going to find an electronic music station in a very near future.

Piper,

I am a supporter of having a electronica station in Toronto. I am also a supporter of all people working to keep the electronica movement stable and growing in Toronto.

That means I support both GlobealGroove and Club246. I'm not 100% convinced that the switch to Club246 is a -bad- thing.

A few questions for you (help convince me):

a) What is wrong with Club246 taking over? Are you not confident that they can provide content on par with GlobalGroove? Do they not have the expertise required to pull off having a show on CHIN?

b) Why do you think CHIN will cancel the show? If Club245 can provide enough exposure, listenership and revenue with their show CHIN will have no reason to cancel it. Perhaps GlobalGroove wasn't living up to CHIN's expectations in this respsect and that is why CHIN looked for options.

c) Club246 has a number of GlobalGroove DJs as principles. Why did they split from GlobalGroove?

---

Bottom line: CHIN is a business. They are going to make business decisions. Unless someone can monitize the airplay - then they are going to cancel ANY show. I've spend my last 6 years on the media side of advertising so I know how this works and the decisions that content providers go through when determining which content they are going to show to their audience.

WURD to the rabbitman...

While change initially hurts, unless there wasn't a very good reason for change, it could land up being worse in the future then if nothing was done at all...

We may not know all the answers as to why but rather than sit and wonder, move forward and take advantage of the change.
I'm sure there's another door of opportunity waiting...

I just thought of a great book regarding change, "Who Stole My Cheese?".
A great book and worth the read...(it's short too for an added bonus) ;)

You are correct I am not convinced that Club246 can do as good of a job as Global Groove did with 100.7. If you look at their internet stream, GrooveRince.com, which they use as a back-up feed when their DJs aren't spinning plays more often than their DJs.
I've been trying to listen to two shows on there since 10pm today and all I kept getting was GrooveRince.com as their DJs were not playing.

I might not know much about Radio but I'm pretty sure running an FM radio station is a bit harder than running an Internet radio station. If they can't do that I'm sorry but that just shows me that they are not the right people for the job.

I have heard from various sources whom I trust regarding these issues that CHIN has offered the time slot up for grabs to the party that can offer the most money for it. If let's say a Spanish person can come up with the most cash guess which show is going to go on air?
That's why I think everyone should write and call in their support regardless if they want GGN back or not. Let them know that you want Dance music to be heard regardless on who's supplying it.

Which GGN DJs does Club246 have on their schedule? Maxx Scholez used to do a show on GGN yes, but his show was taken off air over a year ago and replaced by the GREEK show. The Greeks must have offered CHIN more money. JC? He's in the same board as Maxx. Paul the engineer, yes he used to be with GGN. He used to be with Club246 as well long before this whole thing happend. Paul owns and operates GrooveRince.com which is a common link for both GGN and Club246. If you go to globalgroovenetworks.com you will see that their site is powered by GrooveRince if you go to Club246.com you will that their site is powered by GrooveRince.
What I believe happend is they offered him his Thursday night show which used to be one of the top 3 listened to shows on GGN, as a sign of gratitude for years of support in their internet adventures.

Bottom line, even though I do think that Paul is great on the radio I do not think he's enough to compensate for all the other DJs that have lost their quality shows when GGN was forced out.
D-monic, Mystic Mike, Slip n Slide, Easy Rush, Jelo no one can replace those shows. Maybe club246 will ask them to do shows for them, maybe not. Even if they do ask they still are not guaranteed a time slot as CHIN can give it away to the Greeks or first person who walks into the building with cash.
Now is a perfect time to continue showing CHIN that we want Dance music to play overnight.
