partial-birth abortions are legally permitted in case of mortal danger to the mother, or if the fetus is "not developing correctly," aka severely retarded, improper organ development, lethal disease.
a woman cannot simply decide after her first trimester that she wants an abortion -- she cannot get one unless there are extenuating circumstances that usually mean the child would not survive, or the birth would likely kill the mother.
the defective fetuses would actually be the most interesting for study, but that's not the point i'm trying to make.
orbax, you've fallen victim to manipulation by hardcore christian propagandists. do your research. a fetus aborted as you described would be a partial-birth abortion and subject to the above guidelines. whether the mother goes through the pain and expense of birth and the expense of hospitalizing a terminal infant until it finally dies, or whether she aborts it you have the same result.
edit: speaking of propaganda, the cardinal who chair's the pontiff's commission on family values said yesterday that condoms do not prevent the transmission of AIDS.
as someone pointed out, fetuses aborted in the first trimester have absolutely no chance of survival.
and to whoever commented on stem cells: i don't think they come so much from aborted fetuses as from the blastula, the hollow ball of undifferentiated cells about ten days after fertilization. women don't know they're pregnant at this point (usually), they they tend to come from petri dishes and maybe miscarriages. |

I still stand by my stance on 72nd trimester abortions being legal. As a matter of fact, I don't think that that should be limited to the parents themselves. They may be quite biased. Therefore 3 references from any adult should be adequate justification to abort little s.
