Without trying to sound totally arrogant, I'd like to point out that my "controversial" opinions are most likely a partial result of me NOT relying on the mainstream media.
I don't watch news on TV. I tune in once every few days to watch the Family Guy or the Simpsons, and that's about it. I read newspapers once in a while, and not the same paper every time. Frankly, I think that if something isn't important enough for me to hear through the grapevine, it's not important enough for me to hear at all. When I hear it through the grapevine, it usually means that by that time there's been enough published on it to actually get some objective info.
I've heard of David Blaine, but in all honesty I don't really have a clue what he does (other than "magic tricks") and can't see why anyone would care. And yes, I'm very happy with my attitude, because if I have the choice between being partially ignorant of pop culture and being educated through rose-tinted glasses, I choose ignorance. I don't want to know what mainstream media's opinion is, because the mainstream media's opinion is bull.
Don't pay attention, and you won't have crap crammed down your throat. I wish everyone would do this, we'd be a lot more intelligent as a society. |
Hehe. I've got a list somewhere of questions/statements that make me immediately lose all respect for a person. They include:
"How can you survive without a TV?!"
"How do you not know about (this celebrity's) break up with (that celebrity)?"
I especially love online polls provided by sites like CNN that ask questions like "Do YOU think [Iraq has WMDs/Bin Laden is still alive/etc...]" What do the results show? They show how we have responded to the information our particular news sources have fed us. While that by itself could be useful information, people take these far too seriously.
We have opinions on things that we really have no reason to have opinions on. And while it is the fault of the media for putting spins on data that should be objective, it really is the fault of the populace that we (read "they" ;)) so readily accept it, and actually become passionate about it.
So it seems to me the problem is more fundamental than the way the media presents things. While we may be unable to significantly increase the natural intelligence of people, it certainly is incumbent on us to teach them to use whatever intelligence they do have and to think for themselves, so that they have no reason to pay attention to pap like this.
P.S. Cyrus, this is in no way an attack on you. I myself "hate" some celebrities (namely, Eminem) :). |

ok again, why do you care?
as far as I can tell, hes not asking for sympathy. He just wants our attention.
and he got yours.
congratulation, you helped make him more famous. |

I dont think he wants to be negatively seen...he wants people to be like "ooh ahhhhhhhh.... look at what he did.. what a feat"
hes a joke... and thats what i get out of it... i dont think he would like to know that many peopole think his "efforts" were perceived like that. |

Hearing it through the grape vine usually means it was rooted from the mainstream media.
In actaulity, i think its safe to watch the mainstream, just to see how ignorant some of the things they spew out are. I usually watch mainstream news just to criticize or even laugh at their news coverage. |
Well, that's true, it is safe if you've learned how to think independently, and in your case, I'm sure you have.
But in many cases, people haven't, and in those cases, those people are probably better off just not being exposed to the mainstream media. Like Flyboy said, people seem to be naive and gullible - society discourages independent thought when it should be teaching it.
How many people take a "media" course in school, out of curiosity? |

| The guy gets 8 million dollars for doing this. Can you really blame him? The ones you should be venting at are the media that keep promoting this, not him. |

From the article you posted:

The remarkable thing was the reaction he provoked from the great Great British public.
Love him or hate him, he generated a huge amount of interest, opinions and column inches.
At the end of his six-week stretch inside, about 250,000 people visited the site - all to watch a man doing absolutely nothing.
Maybe it was magic after all. |
He might be an arse. Then again, you might be and probably are a complete arse. Either way I don't really care. The only difference is that David Blaine has just made a few million quid from sitting in a box for 44 days where as you have achieved nothing except having a little cry about something that really doesn't affect you in anyway at all. And at the end of the day he has an amazingly talented illusionist. Nuff said. |

I personally never understood this latest stunt of his at all. It was a waste of media time, a personal danger to those driving on the bridge, and a wasteful danger to his own health.
Aside of this stunt, there are some things he does that absolutely freaks the sh$t out of me. How the hell did he levitate off the street? |

They say there is a very real danger of him dying if he tries to eat solid foods right away. I thoiught when you fasted your body will hold up as long asyour mind holds up. on the photographs he looks incredibly sickly. I've never heard of people fasting being so weak they can barely utter words or have to be lifted out in a stretcher and like that. i thought when you fast, you are supposed to coe out of the xperience more enlightened and even STRONGER in mind and body?
I think David Blaine might have started off with the intention for some kind of "insight" but obviously he lost sight of that if he came out so ...like a somalian!!! |
