politics in the scene

i read a thread recently in the canadian forum which concerned politics between djs. to cut a long story short. there are 2 djs, more "network" friends than genuine friends. we will call them bill and bob. a while back bob organised an event and gave bill a chance to play. as of late however, bill has managed to get together a successful night. bob has been wanting to play at this event, at constantly reminds bill of the favor he gave. bob hands in a demo. bill thinks bob needs to improve, telling him he will get his chance. bob takes it the wrong way beliving he was given empty promises and starts backstabbing etc. etc.
the topic is scattered all over this thread is you're interested

so i'm curious. do a lot of politics occur in our local scene? are djs competitive? or supportive of one another? is it a bitchy industry? is it really all about "networking"? i'm a little bit phased by this as befriending ppl with an ulterior motive kinda sickens me, but is that what you have to do? yesterday i was chit-chatting for a while with a manager of a club near swinburne uni [casey's] and he was giving me the full run down of politics, also occurin in clubs between managers n promoters, managers n djs and even promoters n djs.
i'd like to hear any stories ppl have encountered of the sort. guess its a direction i'd like to ideally head towards within the next few years. so maybe i should prepare myself? *shrug* |

this topic should so have been started when stipsy was still here.
But yeah, I think in any industry with so much $$$ up for grabs, there's going to be a fair bit of politics, backstabbing, undercutting etc. Promoting and DJing is so insanely competitive some people are prepared to do whatever it takes to thrust themselves forward. I would (and do), use contacts to try and get slots but I wouldn't slag off someone else simply to make me look better.
To me, Bob sounds a bit of a tool. Bill said Bob would get his chance so Bob got pissed off and went out and was an arsehole (because that's going to help him get a gig :/).
People need to realise that someone won't employ someone else who is a conniving backstabber as chances are they'll end up backstabbing you. |

| Don't be a because people have long memories. If you're trying to get a gig it's fair enough to try and use your contacts if you have them because everyone else will, but talking other people down is a big no no. It's a bit different if you're running the night. You need to be professional about it and you will want the best chance of it being successful so you wouldn't want to put a guy in the lineup that needs improvement even if he is your friend (that's my opinion). If the dude is alright you could give him the first hour when there aren't many people there to see how he goes. |

Networking definitely occurs in Sydney. A couple of years ago the only dj's you could see if you were into trance would be Nik Fish, Nervous, Pee wee, Jumping Jack etc (not that I would call any of these trance but..) They were booked for every party, mainly because there were only a few promoters around at the time and they knew them and so got on the bill.
On an unrelated topic, love your sig Jaykue!! |

| the industry appears to have so much butt licking and kissing to get ahead and get more money that i doubt you could tell whether someone is genuine or not... not very desirable tho |
