Shure Whitelabel problems!
View this Thread in Original format

I just bought a pair of Shure Whitelabels today. I get home, put my first whitelabel on...it's playing amazing. I obviously had to take a lot of the counter weight off after using my other ty carts. Ok, so the first one is working amazing. I couldn't be happier.
I put the second one on, set it exactly the way the first table is, and this one is skipping, and jumping all over the place everytime I back cue. I put a little more counter weight onto the tonearm, still skipping. A little more weight, still skipping. ALL the weight, still skipping when I back cue. Just to make sure I didn;t overlook something with the settings, I switched the carts and now table one is skipping all over the place. What the hell is going on?!

contact numark. I had m44's that did the same thing. The needles they make can move around a great deal while staying in the groove. Sometimes its just a bad manufacturing product. Tell them your story and ask that they send out a replacement stylus, I did it and in a week I had a new one to go

I just got back from Guitar Center. They exchanged it for a new one. All better. :D

edit. WTF, I just put on my new one and it's doing the same exact thing! It won't let me back cue at all really. the first one I bought works amazing. These second two are horrible! WTF is going on!?

i just got a pair of whitelabels and the first thing i noticed is the 4 wires are looping down. make sure to bend them up towards the cart a little bit so they dont hang down and bump the record...

then i would recalibrate your weights again. im using 2.5grams and they seem to be fine.

i had a small problem with my second deck bouncing out of the groove no matter what needle i had, but it turned out i had to level the table a little better...now they play fine

dumb question: have you adjusted the anti-skate on the skipping deck?

dumb question #2: did you calibrate the counterweights before setting them? As in, did you first balance the tonearm, then set the counter weight to zero, then set it to the correct tracking weight?

haha, no. Please explain. I am confused.

Well, here are the steps for setting the tracking weight on your needle correctly. Note that I don't know what the recommended tracking weight of a Shure Whitelabel cart is, so I'm just going to use 3 grams for an example:

1) install your cart

2) not worrying about the numbered increments on your tonearm's counterweight, adjust the weight so that your tonearm, when left untouched, balances horizontally in mid-air.

3) at this point, set your counterweight's scale to zero, without adjusting the actual weight itself - this is called calibrating your counterweight, so that the zero mark will mean the tonearm is actually at a tracking weight of zero.

4) last of all, NOW you adjust the actual counterweight to a tracking weight of 3 grams (or whatever is recommended by Shure).

After that, you set the anti-skating feature on your deck, personally I don't understand what that does... I mean obviously it prevents the needle from skating across your vinyls and skipping... but I don't understand HOW it works, so I'll let someone else explain that.

and dont forget about height.
the height for Whitelabels might be different than for your previous needles.

have you tried switching the carts and trying the cart that doesn't work on the deck with the one that does work?
