... or to play for weak national teams will do I guess...

the other thread was getting monotonous (eg. Maradona, Pele, and all the usual suspects)

So here goes: My list is a little biased towards European players as I dont know much of other continents... and its also biased towards post 90s...

GK: Bruce Grobberlar

LB: Sammi Hyypia
CB: Karel Rada
CB: Dennis Irwin
RB: Radek Latal

LM: Ryan Giggs
CLM: George Best
CRM: Eric Cantona
RM: Stefan Effenberg (ok so he did play in the WC but not as much as he should have)

CF: George Weah
CF: Jean Pierre Papin

Most potential wasted: Ivan De La Pena

What about you guys?
Matty V
Cantona and Best were attackers, not midfielders

sorry just being technical :)

Sami Hyypiä indeed. Jari Litmanen as well.

Other players I'd name
F Shota Arveladze
D Kakhaber Kaladze
Phat Bastard
Shevchenko
Still young but he'll probably never get to WC with that poor Ukranian team

Also Mutu and Chivu missed WC 2002 with Romania but I'm sure they'll get there someday. Hopefully in 2006.

Its sad for Wales and especially Giggs that it will be hard if they ever reach a tournament.

They were close this year, in the qualify for Euro2004, but didnt make it... sad, would love to see Giggs there :)

Yeah Giggs is sensational to watch. Absolutely love it when the ball is at his feet. In my books he is a terribly underated player. He's up there with the best of them but is terribly unfortunate to play for a weak nation.

Maybe if he had decided to play for England instead (he was elgible to at the start of his career) things would have been rosier (both for him and England).

i remember reading about this one soviet forward who was supposedly the best in the world but he never played in the world cup because he got charged with raping a girl or something like that

forgot his name

Nicolas Anelka missed WC 1998 & 2002 and he will probably miss Germany 2006 if he doesn't show more respect to French Federation and french team coach Jacques Santini...
