E-mail tracking

Hello,

i have a question.
If someone sends you an e-mail, there are ways to track that person down using his ip adress or something, correct?
Now my question is, does anyone here knows how to do this?
I know there are programs available but i wanted to hear from you guys what are the best programs for this, or are there other ways to make sure that the person who send you an e-mail is really the person he claims to be?

Thing is, i've been receiving a lot of mails from someone and i really want to know who he/she is. I use msn messenger and added that person's e-mail adress to my contacts, maybe i can track him/her down through messenger???

Guys this is really important, so any help is welcome here

i know in yahoo mail theres an option sayin "view full headers" which shows the originatin IP etc.

im not sure about hotmail though?

If you're using Outlook (express), look around on the e-mail for a "Options" or "Properties" to the e-mail and it will give you a list of information such as where the e-mail has traveled to/from and IP's, hosts from which it came.

I use hotmail.

Maybe there are other ways to find out... like a trojan or something. If someone wants to help me, please do, the mystery is still unsolved.

i still have the same probem. That person keeps on sending me mails and i've checked the IP adres and it says the mail was sent from washington!! Thing is, i don't know anybody from washington?!

Maybe someone knows what else i can do with the IP to track that person?????

The email headers are unlikely to tell you the originating IP address of the mail, more likely the first server that the mail passed through.

Run whois and tracert commands on the IP address, see who owns it and so forth. You'll probably find that the IP address belongs to the person's net provider (eg Verizon), and there's no way in hell they're ever going to tell you who was using that IP address at certain times.

Basically, what you're asking is very difficult and takes a very high level of computer skills. That's why you get so much spam - it's just so difficult to track down and stop the people who are doing it.

Hi guys,

need to know something. I've been collecting e-mails from everyone who send me one, just to compare the ip adresses. As you know or don't know i have been receiving mails from someone but he/she refuses to tell me his/her name. I figured it must be someone i know and now i discovered that a friend of mine has almost the same ip as the mysterious person.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: If for example you get mail from IP XXX.XXX.XX.103
and one from IP XXX.XXX.XX.157
and all X are the same numbers, is this the same person then??

What do you mean by that? He has cable if that's what you're asking. Thanks in advance for your help
jon
cos when he would reconect to the internet he would be given a different IP address, isp's asign ips in chuks with only the last 2 sets of numbers changing normally. it could of course be 2 people in the same area using the same ip, but more likley to be the one person.
