why cant I deny it? there is no evidence to show it will happen. Go find me one tidbit that suggests such a thing and we can talk.

If this sort of thing has happened around the world throughout history, what makes you think it won't happen in the western world? The fact the ethnic groups fight when the economy is crap. It happens everywere throughout history, N. Ireland, Russia, Yugoslavia etc. When the depression hit there were 33,000 members of the kkk in western canada. do you think theres that many now. No because the economy is good.

I was typing one up a few days ago and my computer crashed. I'm pretty busy with all the end-of-semester stuff here at school, so I haven't had time to do it again. I'll probably get around to it while I'm at home for Thanksgiving Break, if not this weekend. :)

i think louislabelle is making a valid point...its human nature to seek someone to blame when things go wrong, and i wouldn't be surprised at all that ethnic groups started blaming each other when the economy took a turn for the worse. im not saying that this is the way it will happen, just that it won't be surprising if it did. i think each group will perceive the other as a drain on the economy leading to alot of ethnic tensions...i remember here in LA a couple yrs. ago there were some serious problems between persians and hispanics at a high school, i dont remember what the cause was...also look at all the riots that recently took place in england

as for the segregation thing...i think he's right on that too...when i went to high school and even now when im in uni i notice that by and large ppl. tend to mix and mingle with members of their own race. i dont think that this is evidence of racism, but it is indicative of people's social preferences. the way i see it, its not that ppl. dislike ppl. of other races, its just that they *prefer* being around members of their own race...just comes down to human nature, i guess. we like being with ppl. that have alot in common with ourselves. at my CC u see lots of different (homogenous) groups of different races, but i really would be lying if i said there was a significant amount of inter-racial interaction...

here's a real life application of this topic in our local news...
this was taken from our student run campus newspaper:

A&M diversity draws debate

By Sonia Moghe

Student groups gathered Wednesday to protest and support Dr. James Anderson taking office as vice president and associate provost for institutional assessment and diversity.

One student group, the Texas A&M chapter of Young Conservatives of America held an
affirmative action bake sale in protest.

"We're out here today to show our objections to this new administrative position," said Mark McCaig, communications director for the YCT.

After YCT announced its intentions to hold the bake sale, the Department of Multicultural Services urged multicultural student organizations to show their support for Anderson by setting up tables at Rudder Fountain. Several organizations rallied against the bake sale outside the Academic Building.

"This is probably the most diverse group of students I've ever seen on campus," said Nick Anthis, president of the Texas Aggie Democrats.

The bake sale, not meant to raise money but merely raise awareness about affirmative action, offered store-bought baked goods for sale at prices based on race. Asians had to pay $1 for baked goods, whites 75 cents, Hispanics 25 cents, and African Americans 10 cents.
The reason for the pricing was symbolic; those who paid the most at the bake sale paid the most because of affirmative action. Asians paid the most because they are put at the greatest disadvantage by affirmative action, McCaig said.

"I'm offended by the way (the YCT) approached the situation," said Rebekah Sanchez, a member of Delta Xi Nu. "They could have been more politically correct - I think they focused too much on shock value."

The YCT's position is that the hiring of Anderson deprives A&M of funds that could otherwise be used to fund student activities, lower tuition costs and help support dying departments, such as the department of journalism.

Other groups, such as the Texas Aggie Democrats, see Anderson's appointment as a move in the right direction. Anthis said he was shocked when he first came to A&M as a freshman by how much the school lacked diversity of race, religion and ideas.

"We support the University's attempt to diversify A&M," Anthis said. "We don't want to see this small but vocal group ruin that."

Matt Maddox, President of the YCT, said the bake sale, although offensive to some, benefits the campus because it allowed students of different ideological backgrounds to get together and debate their opinions.

"We've engaged in spirited debate, but nothing violent has occurred," Maddox said. "We just wanted to encourage Anderson to look past superficial characteristics such as race in attempting to diversify A&M and instead look to diversify intellectually."

i thought the bolded part was a good yet hillarious ploy

The idea of affirmative action really irks me while I understand from the point of view it attempts to address the idea of historical racial problems in relation to opportunities along many different social parameters, there still remains the problem that someone deserving may get stiffed for a lower performing individual. The benefit of this to blacks are limited at best in numbers of opportunities and wished that our government spent more time fixing up the broke public school system of large innercities instead of patting a few people on the back when it comes to affirmative action. As long as the school system remains broken in some places, blacks primarily will continue to fight an uphill battle to shake off the history of social problems, which affirmative action can never address fully.

Oh ya quit whinning about american schools go to the third world they don't even have schools. I've had enough of hearing American blacks talk about how bad they have. The mexicans are in the same position and they never complain, why do the blacks have to always make people feel sorry for them. When the mexicans just work hard for no matter how little the pay is.

I am sorry but you are severely mistaken in your remarks about referring to American blacks, first of all I am not an American black, I migrated to this country from Guyana in South America-a third world country of which you speak about, I also went to school in that third world country, I spent 12 years of my life in that third world country, a lenght of time greater than I have been in America.
Live in the Ghettos of America as a black person or hispanic and then you can talk to me about quit whining, there is no darn person whining on this board, reread my post I stated that the public school system, which I attended in the innercity needs to receive stronger support for all minorities who attend them, rather than dishing out affirmative action policies that benefit a few in an unfair manner.
I would appreciate it if you retract your pathetically incorrect statement of me as Black American which I am not. It is the least you can do to save face.

I frankly am very troubled by your statement in that you seem to hop on the logic of looking at this as a racial matter, in saying you are "tired of Blacks whining." I sincerely hope that you are not threading down that path.

Based on your previous posts I see the pattern of your arguments, some valid and some downright biased, I think I have a good idea of whom I am speaking to. Explains the remarks that you made. Funny thing is if my pic was not their you would have no idea that I was black and would have made no reference to race. Moreover you fail to justify yourself because you speak of the third world and education, I am from the third world and received an education there as well. Which American blacks are you referring to, the ones in the South, the ones in the East, West, oh that's right it really doesn't matter, way to make a point.

Quand il vient à vous, tout que je peux dire est chacun son gôut

Are you trying to tell me the ghettos of America are as bad as Yugoslavia or Russia, what is it with you people. Never compare yourself to people living in warzones. I'm pissed becuase Africans miatas whatever kind of black people there is. Love to blame all your problems on the European race. Even though we give billions in aid to Africa which is not used for what it is intended, because of the greed. Blacks arn't discriminated against in America there are black doctors lawyers you even have your own T.V. stations. Don't try to tell the world lies.
