Yes, i know, an odd thread ;)
Basically i'd like to know how people (Non aussies...can be asian, american, european etc, doesn't matter) view Australia.
As in when you hear the word Australia, what image comes in to your mind; what do you think the country is like?
This is all brought on by me seeing clips from a new Steve Irwin show in which Americans make some disturbingly incorrect statments about what Australia is like :p |

Words that come to mind: Kangaroo, Koala, Steve Irwin, Steryl Aug, Sydney, Down Under ;)
Australia is a very mysterious continent...it's about the least spoken of next to Antartica. Rarely do you hear about it in the news. Seems like a peaceful place though as I don't recall the last time you guys were directly involved in a war besides WWII. I know you guys supported the recent war in Iraq though. |

Well Arctic, I see Australia as my dream destination... I would love to live there and if there is anything I can do to make this happen I will:)
I view it as a warm place, where people aren't as stuck up/rigid as Canadians and Americans. It has a more relaxed atmosphere resembeling that of Europe. The Landscape is as broad as the ocean, anything from the beautiful outback, beaches, and citylife to suit everyone's different needs. Now having never been there these are pretty bold presumptions, but somehow I believe(hope) I am not that far off:tongue2
Please enlighten me, and let me know if i am at all right  |

| i think of Kangaroos, that dome thing in Sydney, vast landscapes, the croc hunter ;) , triple J, wabbits, huge bees |

I view Australia exactly like how I view Canada, except much hotter. And how do I view Canada? A peaceful version of the USA, except much colder.
And then Switzerland is a peaceful version of all the European countries. |

I get all of my info about Australia from watching Steve Irwin, The Simpsons, and of course how could one forget, Mel Gibson in "The Road Warrior."
So logically,

you guys all wrestle crocs, play "knifey spoony" in the pub, and are going through a major oil shortage.

We sent troops to the war in iraq ;)
Interesting responses. The only things that concern me arethe fact that people think we either have kangaroos for pets :nervous:, or that we frequently eat them, and the mention of Steve Irwin, who frankly is a moron who no one down here likes.
And Melbourne pwns sydney any day :p
Summer21: I's say that that was pretty spot on, it is very varied.
Dmatrox: You mean the Olympic stadium, or the opera house ? :D |

that thing got progressively less funny the more you watched it...now it isnt funny at all
Anyhow, before i went to australia myself i imagined it mostly as subtropical on the coast with lots of beaches, and flat and dry shrubbery in the middle, with the cities of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth as cosmopolitan, cleaner versions of American cities
what do you know, its exactly what i got |

Arrrgghhhh, stop using my american bashing quotes to make me look stupid :p
And nah, the oil is fine, we managed to muscle in on some East Timorese oil due to the fact that we have troops there ;)
And as for sandboarding, believe it or not, we have ski resorts down here :thepirate |
