Anyhow, learn music theory first. Take some courses at your school/university. |

What I would do if I were you is this.
Open the projects folder and check out some of the demos to see how they have been made. You will be able to see the effects the producers have put on the sounds as well as how the melodies are made. You can save the instrument states and import into your songs so you can have the same sounds. Or use their sounds as a base to give you that trancy sound and then work from that.
'Toby-Striker' is a good example. While it's not an amazing trance track in it's own right it can give you an idea of what's going on. It would also say that it's a bit hard not knowing how much musical experience you have, but I would definately recomend that you learn an instrument of some sort even if it's just to get the basics. This will also help your DJing further down the line too.
People also make the mistake of thinking that good trance is just about the melody. There is a whole lot more besides and very often it's your attention to detail that will make you stand out as a producer. Bass lines, layered sounds and percussion as well as melody.
Listen to your records to see what the pros do. You will notice that most of them are very progressive in the beggining i.e. they will add something new every other phrase (Sometimes more or less). This can be in the form of new instruments kicking in or a new hi hat sound. Once you start getting a good base for the track you may well hear a melody that goes with it.
Sometimes I write melodies first but if I do it that way it turns out nothing like I intended it (not a bad thing) as I add stuff.
Hard question to answer but I hope this helps.
Cheers

I personally think that was a good answer, another suggestion is to try to cover a song you like and making it in FL.
I get my melodies out first by getting the right synth or sample, after you find a good one then I experiment (helps allot if you have a midi keyboard) and from that I get a small melody out (and yes it does help if you know a little about a musical instrument, but mostly for me its experimenting until I get a chatchy melody) and the details are very important too sometimes even more than the melody because you can make a catchy melody but if the details don't add up the catch goes away when you hear the complete track same goes viceversa good details, not that good melody.... |

I studied piano, singing and music theory and composition for years growing up. I was all gung-ho to try my hand at making trance. I finally got a copy of FL3.5 back in May, and I still haven't been able to make a track that I'm really happy with yet!! It takes a long time to learn how to best use the software, to develop an ear that lets you identify what's missing in your track, and the experience to decide the best way to go about adding/changing your mix. This site has helped me already (I just discovered it two days ago) I just went back and remixed a song I thought I had done well, and found a whole bunch of new things that I could make better. Things I didn't even know to look for before. And I'm realizing more and more that there's still alot further I can go.
Keep in mind that it's not just the melody itself that defines the mood of the tune, but the way a melody interacts with the bass and the other sounds. Harmony is very important. It might help while you're trying to get the melody to sound right to mute all the drums and effects, and just listen to the bass, harmony (pads, etc) and melody and how they interact. If you can find a good balance there without drums and effects, when you put them back in, it'll be all the better.
My advice is to just keep plugging away at it. Bit by bit you'll develop a feel for how to make the software do what you hear in your head. Obviously since you've been DJing for a while you know what you want to hear next, so just have patience.
Oh yeah, check out my website below. All the songs on it were made with FL3.5, and only using sounds that came with it. Now I will say that the mastering SUCKS!!! I had no idea about the technical side of things when I made those tracks, but have a listen anyways! |

yeah... the samples in fruity are .. so start look for new one's... check out the quality sample thread in the top and another tip is too take sounds out of other track's, like the kick, percussions and bass etc...
work's best in the intro / outro mostly.
and you need some VST pluggins.. there is some free one's at KVR-VST that actually is really good.. there is a thread about softsynth's too in the top.
and try to play around too... don't expect to make something really good in the beginning.. my track's sounded like .. dunno if it even was trance.. hehe
and check out the cover songs and such that is coming with the program.. can help you alot |
