x = y + x
x = x - y
y = 0

Wouldn't that be -y = 0?
TranceGiant
x is any number, y must be 0.

there is no negative 0
Galapidate
Still if you multiply both sides by -1 or divide out by -1, it is still y=0.

Of course not.. Anything you pass to the other side of the equation mark is multiplied by -1. On the right side it says -y, so bringing it to the left side yields y.

sqrt(x^2) = ?

For the record: x or -x :)

Be more specific.

y = x - x

y = 0

Oops! I solved for y, not x! But since there's an x on both sides of the equation, it doesn't matter what x is, cause it'll amount to 0.

But!

If 0/x = 0, and x/x = 1, and x/0 is undefined(?), what is 0/0? (0,1,or undefined?)
zarathustra
x/0 -> inf for x!=0
x/0 -> undefined for x=0
