Im applying for a 6 week stay through Youth for Understanding so I can go there this summer...if i can get a scholarship it would ing own, ive never wanted to go somewhere that badly before

I think its the fact that its such a blend of traditional culture with western society, and the fact that its not poor and has some fascinating sights to see only makes me want to go there even more :D

they have english-taught universities there that you can study at for a little while... if you dont feel like learning the language..

you can also teach english there without having to know any japanese and it supposedly pays pretty good... getting paid lots of money to teach hot 18 year olds their ABC's is my idea of a good job LOL

Damn! This thread pops up just after I've been reading a (rather big) FAQ on living in Japan, as I was thinking about going there since 1999 but, never got the chance (still don't, really). I want to know if the following is true:

1. Japan is sinking 3 cm per year.
2. The majority of Japanese wives are treated practically like slaves (they MUST stay home and do things for their husband; have limited voice in the media)

I don't believe that #2 is the case anymore but, I never known anyone who'd be able to 100% honestly answer this, as I know no people living in Japan...

Can some experienced TranceAddicts here give some decent information besides what's already presented (primarily for people from the US) in The Japan FAQ ( http://thejapanfaq.cjb.net ) about foreigners adapting to Japanese culture, visiting, and living in Japan? Thanks...

lived there for 2 years when i was in highschool. i was near hiroshima...it would take too long to get into everything, but it was a great experience and i can't wait to go back one day.

PS_ beer and cigarette machines on every corner...i also saw (i you not) a vending machine with pornos in it in a more rurual area when i went hiking on Mt. Fugii. that was interesting. don't get too excited though, it's illegal to show the "goods" in the pornos there, it's all blurred out:p

my mom actually did that...she got recruted from some company in L.A. she loved it. i was living w/ my dad and she missed me so she figured out a way to live there too. if u want some info on how she got that job, i can probably ask her and give you some info.

Never been, but certainly like to go. I fly with 2 Japanese Female Captains here...they are awesome. They think I'm a freak because my two favorite TV shows are Iron Chef, and MXC. One went to High School with Towa Tei and was shocked that I knew who that was. The other is looking out for my best interests and trying to set me up...I say as long as she would fit in her suitcase when flying back...that would work just fine.

Other than that ... I have no usefull information.

remember kids V is for victory, not peace.

it is called the jet program. once you have completed a degree they will hire you over there in japan to teach english. You can request were you want to teach but they don't guarantee anything. pay i heard of last is around $34,000. it has to be for a year though. it is a good idea to be familiar with the language but you don't have to be fluent. i just might do it. my japanese is improving greatly and once i graduate (spring 2005) i would be crazy enough to go live over there for a year.

go here for more info
