| if you're not a yankee fan these days. they just got javier vasquez for their starting rotation. they got flash gordon and paul quantrill for the bullpen. are looking at hasegawa and foulke for the bullpen. gary sheffield will be officially a yankee by the weekend. george steinbrenner really takes the fun out of baseball. however, i do find a few things funny. one, the yankees now have no first basemen because nick johnson was probably included in the vasquez trade. and giambi BLOWS at 1st. so the yankees will probably spend another billion dollars and trade for mike sweeney or richie sexson (sarcasm). and that brings me to my next point. by the end of this off-season, the yankees will have a payroll way over $200 million. this doubles the next closest teams payroll (red sox). now, when a team has a payroll that is double of the next closest team, wouldn't you expect them to win 130 games a year? with a rotation like mussina, vasquez, and most likely kevin brown, millwood, or colon. with a lineup that has aaron boone as the #9 hitter. aaron boone was 3, 4, or 5 when he was with the reds, a team that also included adam dunn, ken griffey jr, sean casey, and austin kearns (all of whom are good ML hitters). with the team including hitters like giambi, posada, jeter, and matsui. with all of these things, the yankees will still win only 90-100 games. meanwhile teams like the giants, who have bonds... and jose cruz jr... with really only 1 *great* starter, come out with 96 wins. maybe if steinbrenner stopped paying average players with excellent players salaries, he wouldn't be so intent on winning and continue to destroy the market by snatching up all the good players. at least vlad the impaler won't be a yankee. so one team will get a great player... |

I'm still praying for a salary cap.
I'll worry about this in a few months though. Yankee fans wonder why yankee haters (like myself) love to rain on their parade when they lose. People like Steinbrenner suck all the sport out of the game of baseball.
Think about it though, he cant be in charge of the evil empire forever. i mean he is like 75 now or something isn't he? hopefully in a few years when he stops throwing money around all over the place, they'll get someone to make a bunch of bad decisions again like the 80's. well we can all hope at least. |

| Ill be honest, I love the Yankees as mush as I hate Steinbrenner... He doents exactly need to stop getting good players, but he need to stop paying players that can cope with 2mil a year and paying them 4 or 5 or more just to make sure they come here. This makes me wonder whether Steinbrenner trusts Cashman to make good deals that they need to offer so much for mediocracy. |

| All of this whining over salary serves no purpose, look up the numbers the Yankees are giving the most money, rightfully so to the K.C. Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, etc under the collective bargaining agreement for being over the Luxury Tax threshold. As a diehard Yankees fan I say less teams in the league is what is needed for starters. Do we really need a baseball team in Montreal or Tampa Bay, Baseball and the greedy owners that expand and expand to get into more markets need to look strongly at this. Cut the teams its a start, then talk to me about money being spent, its not the Yankees fault they are in New York, look at the Mets. P.S. who one the world series this year the Florida Marlins (big market right?), the year before the Angels (big market, but little spenders), makes you wonder. |

| Thats kinda the point hes trying to make, you dont need to go out spending all this money to get some place in baseball. Florida is a growing market and they arent going nuts with salary... won the WS | the Angels - big market, little spenders... won the WS | the Twins - big market, super little spenders... past few years have been winning 90+ games and making it to the playoffs. |

yeah vlad, that was the point i was making. you brought up the twins. look at their team. hunter and jones? thats basically their lineup. and they invested in an above average closer who pitches everyday. yet they are great. their payroll cannot be large at all. i'd say no more than 40-60 mill. the yankees triple that salary, and their talent is obviously better. yet they win, roughly, the same amount of games as the twins. honestly, it makes no sense. it makes you wonder if, instead of the yankees they were the new york all-stars and consisted of the AL All-star team with a salary of probably $800 mill, would they still only win 100 games? because basically, thats what the yankees are right now. probably 15 of the 25 man roster this year will have been an all-star once in his career.
and as for less teams, i say keep it the way it is. 30 is more than enough to have well rounded teams for the most part. all they need to do is move the expos. the royals are doing good (with players like mike sweeney, carlos beltran, and angel berroa they better be doing good). the royals actually re-signed 3 free agents. the 3 guys took less money from the royals because they loved playing there. they probably could've gotten 8 mil from george if they held out... |

i would love to see that WS. it would be classic. but 1 team a lot of people forget about is the phillies. they have the potential to be a dynasty. all they need is 1 great starter to back up millwood (if he re-signs) and they'll be very close with the braves all season. this also looks to be the year where we will see the real pat burrell. the #1 draft pick pat burrell. this'll be the year where he hits 40 HRs, bats .290 with 120 rbis and like a .400 obp. and with players like lieberthal, rollins (arguably the best SS in the NL), thome and abreu... the phillies will be a force to be reckoned with (although, as a NYMets fan, the phillies are my sworn enemy).
i just hope the mets do *something* this off-season. i think they're actually pretty close to signing Kazuo Matsui, which is good and bad. good because we get a great player, but bad because we'll probably move our best young player to a different position. i hope we just move kaz to 2nd and not reyes. reyes at second would make kaz the only infielder in his correct position... even though wigginton is an excellent 3rd basemen. |

Cubs got Derek Lee which solidifies 1st Base.
Picked up that pitcher from the Twins which solidifies our bullpen.
There is talk of Maddux returning after leaving in 1990. Despite his age he would be very beneficial. |

| the only thing i give steinbrenner credit for is that he wants to win at all costs. and it gives me great pleasure to watch the yankees fail when they spend a lot of money. on the other hand, it also hurts my heart that the mets spend so much to no avail :-( yeah i'm a mets fan heh. but i've rooted for the twins and the A's in the AL just cuz they're fun to watch. oh, and curt schilling won't win another world series again... ;-) |
