I was @ a friends house this weekend, and they had Bell's Sympatico "High Speed" internet, for $40.
It sucked, kept losing connectivity, and took over 2 minutes to load TA. So I went here http://www.dslreports.com Bell claimed 960 kbps downstream and 120kbps upstream, and they tested @ 420/60. This was with all programs shut down, and nothing else taking up their connection.
Now, I get over 1 MB connection with my rogers high speed @ $40 a month, have lost my connection only due to maintenance in the 3 yrs I've had it, and am an admitted download whore.
Now, putting aside all the horror stories about the big companies, and our bitter, bitter memories of dealing with customer service and billing departments, I say go to the site, do a speed test, and post the results with you ISP and the bandwidth you are promised in your contract.
It would be interesting to see no matter the service issues, are we all getting what we pay for, or getting collectively screwed for supposed "high speed" connections.
(make sure all programs are closed, including antitvirus for best results) |

Heh, I can tell you right now that everybody's getting collectively screwed without doing any speed test (those things aren't accurate anyway, since it depends on the server location and other stuff).
Basically those numbers (960/120) are upper margins, not lower ones. Most people manage to pull off about half of the "contract speed" between their own system and their own ISP (i.e. if you're downloading from Sympatico/Rogers' newsgroups). When you're downloading things from external servers, other factors come into play like the speeds of intermediate servers, and you only get that full bandwidth when you're downloading many files at a time.
Frankly, I'd love to see their collective asses sued over their bull advertising claims (100 times faster than 56k dialup... this would imply a 5.6 megabit connection at 700k/s, has anybody ever reached that speed?). But their collective asses are covered with the wording of their contracts. So, as customers, we kinda just have to put up with being raped...
You want guaranteed speed, get a fiber optic line... :p |

| I've been a sympatico customer for a long time and I've only had a problem once when they swicthed from the 1Mbit to 1.5Mbit line. My u/l and d/l speeds are always what they are supposed to be so no complaints here. |

This test is on my crappy Pentium3 machine upstairs..
2003-12-08 14:55:50 EST: 1810 / 131
Your download speed : 1810350 bps, or 1810 kbps.
A 220.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 131147 bps, or 131 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
Now, after checking on roger's site, they are promising up to/around 3mb download, 364 upload.
My kbps is 221 @ the moment, but I think I should be getting higher if I'm on a 3mb connection. All in all, no complaints, but I'm going to call tech support and do some tweaking :clown: |

There are 3 lvls of Sympatico. What lvl do you have? What transfer rate are they promising?
My friends line is now @ the promised speeds after a lot of tweaking to their XP settings. |

| i've had Sympatico hispeed for almost 3 years now, and have never had connectivity problems or given any thought to swtiching. Come to think of it, if all my 'utilities' were as problem-free as Sympatico has been, my life would be a lot simpler. |

Canuck,
Ultra is about 69 $ which i think i pay, since i dont even look at the bill, yeah i know- i should look at them i just pay them.lol
they dont promise anything, it clearly mentions upto 3 mbps, even with regular their internet service, because it purely depends in the vicinity you live in and how far your from their exchange. |

Maxtuh,
That's a lot of cash, considering they only promise speeds relative to Roger's High Speed promises (3mbps). Roger's is $45 for new signups, $39.99 for older members and then they have High Speed lite for $24, whereas Bell's lvl goes $69, $39, $24 |

I know its pretty high, but i guess its better than rogers 1.5 high speed connection, you cant go higher than 150-189k on downloads on rogers.
On ultra its blazing fast at 350k or more sometimes. No breakups on line like cable or even slow down of speeds. its very constant speed, unlike cable cable which is a burstable speeds. |
