does anybody here has the same prob:

when i just started djing i had to go ( for the first time) to a real recordstore, it was just so impressing that i got "high" of the fact that i was in a recordstore between other dj's. so i began searching for records and i found some and bought them. i tought the sounded great at the time but when i compare them to my other records that i've recently bought they ,well, suck.
Is it normally that you buy ty songs first and is it a learning proces to pick out the good songs?

I've certainly got records i will never play again.

It seems to be the case of when first buying vinyl you cant get enough, and you will by tunes that you will not play in the future.

As well as the fact that it takes time to know what you like to spin.

Its a learning curve.

it feels like such a waste of money.
i had better listen to more tracks before i went out and bought some

but i bought them to learn how to beatmatch probably so these songs have very boring basslines
when i came into the recordstore lately to buy some decent records i saw that the copies of the records i first bought were still there, that means that nowbody else bought them

don't regret it, at least you know what you dont like to mix anymore, and that in the future you are going to buy tunes you will use.

Then again, i have got andain - beautiful things, its a great track, but i do know that it will fit into none of my sets.

I have a bunch of records that I bought a when I first started that I wouldn't buy or play now, but now I have another problem now:
I have two styles that I really love to spin: real hard trance without too many keys and then more progressive house/tribal. In your experience do you find that it's better to settle on one stlyle and just work with that or to experiment with different ones. I know that you should play what you love to listen to but I feel like you would be a better dj by focusing in just one style and getting really good at it. Anyway I'd love to hear anyone's experience who has ever ran into this. Thanks!

I kinda have the same problem,

I have a huge variety in my records, from andain, and oceanlab, to inzite , then some of the darker stuff, outback - minds in motion, turtle beach, to igor s boomerang and some other marco v stuff, with all the uplifting aalto rush, mike shivers - feelings to fictivision cquence - symbols right up to alex hamlett run with it to include.

i cover so much its hard to know what, let alone where to start when im spinning.

I know the tunes that give me the most satisfaction to mix, but then again i like just following my mood and doing a mellow set one night to a really pumping the next.

I suppose its down to what you fancy at home. The important bit is what you spin out at a gig. This will be determined by all the factors of venue, crowd, who you are before and after in set times. and after actual mixing skills the better dj's enhance to the night not make it their own.

just my imo

your problem is the same problem almost every other dj has that is starting out. you need to struggle though all this as you find and build the style you play that is truely yours. once you find your style, purchasing records that will retain more life in your box than on your shelf becomes a bit easier.

yeap, it is all about forming your style. Once you spin for a while you start to know exactly what are the types of songs you love. I bought some horrible stuff to, but it did teach me what not to buy hehe.

and one of the reasons I started djin was to make my own mixes of stuff I was interested in, so if I am in a trance mood, I have a trance mix, house mood, well you get the picture.

anyways, there is nothing like that gitty feeling you get when buying records in a record store :)....in fact I think I need to go to the store this week.

what maybe be a waste of space to you, might be gold to someone else. Try selling the records you dont want.

well, i used to have something similar, but tribal & prog house won me over. not to diss hardtrance, but ive seen many DJs who spin that and only that get sick of it. IMO, its not what it used to be, its all been done by now. if you still love trance, as i do, tr getting some DEEP trance, you can mix it nicely with house. there is also deep house with quite trancey elements. if you want a good example of what i mean, let me know, ill give you a set from a local DJ, 2 hour set he did opening for Tiesto (which owned tiesto's set btw) starting with chus & ceballos style house, and going through everything from that melodic housey sound shinichi/yooshi has to some oldschool trancers like original mix of cafe del mar to some progressive trance and house like G&D, Max Graham and Sander K.

My first few records sucked, I don't know what the hell I was thinking when I bought them. I already knew exactly what I wanted to spin (trance), yet I somehow managed to buy crap.

Beyond that, yah, you just need to give it time, as well as probably settle for working on filling out a particularly genre first before buying too many records from other areas. For example, my trance collection is just starting to reach a point that I'm happy with, and now I'm starting to flesh out my quantity of harder trance vinyl.
