Speaking of dreams, how about some wierd dreaming things?
I used to suffer from sleep paralysis. This is the most scary thing ever guys. Basically, as you're falling asleep you suddenly realise that you can't move. But you're still awake and having coherrent thoughts, you just can't move at all. It's got something to do with when your body automatically shuts off when you sleep (so you don't act out your dreams), but it goes all screwed up and the timings wrong. It's honestly the worst thing in the world and is often accompanied by a "feeling" that somebody is standing next to you. The wierd thing is, you fall asleep more-or-less straight away anyway and often don't remember it. I'd forgotten all about it until I read something about it and I suddenly remembered all the times it happened to me and how scary it was. Wierd eh?
The other thing I was going to ask about is lucid dreaming (where you're aware you are dreaming and are able to directly control events in the dream). This happened to me once when I was very young and I made myself fly over my school fence. But there are apparently people who have "trained" themselves so they are able to do this on a regular basis. Since there are a few medatative types lurking about the boards I was wondering what the technique was and if anybody had ever done it? |

| I occasionally lucid dream. Sometimes I have a nightmare that I need to stop whenever I'm unable to deal with the stress and fear that that nightmare causes me to experience. Other times I'm having sex and I'm able to semiconsciously direct my sexual actions, often times prolonging the dream until my awareness of the dream state becomes too conscious which is when the dream ends. I have also often been able to control my leaping/flying ability so that when I leap too far into the clouds (marked by blackness) I'm able to make an immediate descension back into the light. There are other lucid dreams I've had but these are the most usual. |

i guess this thread is the offspring of the "weird dreams" thread...but what the heck, still interesting stuff..
all of what has been posted here is actually discussed in detail in psychology textbooks, im sure u'll already know about this...
the feeling of "falling" when u're sleeping is one of the most common sleep-things felt...
as for the part about where u suddenly wake up with a "jerk", as if u were violently shaken...well...ur soul is returning to ur body. literally.
lucid dreaming...i swear to God i wish i could lucid dream...but unfortunately its never happened...what the heck..

| you can get out of sleep paralysis by thinking about moving your head to one side as violently as possible, count to three, and then do it..trust me, it works. |

| hehe, sorry but i have to ask...what the hell is lucid dreaming? lol i'd rather ask than act like i know like a moron. hahah that is freaky about your soul returning to your body when u have that falling dream. how do you know that for a fact? just curious. i get that dream often. my sister has this really cool book and it's basically all these things (that are common i guess) that you can dream about and it tells u what it means when u dream that. like for instance a few weeks ago, i had a ing weird ass dream that i was camping or some only there was a school near by and it was like in some desert in africa and i was walking to use the bathrooms and i left my bf and my two dogs alone (they were in the dream...obviously) and then when i was done using the bathroom, i was walking back to where we were camped out and i saw two lions on the prowl for my bf and the dogs. they were like just sitting there watching my dogs and bf and just like waiting. my bf had no idea they were there and he was like playing with my dogs and acting care free and he was too far away for me to yell to him and i didn't want to attract the lions' attention. i just kept trying to think of what i could do to get the lions away or get my bf's attention. i was so ing scared in the dream and i was like crying practically when i woke up, it was horrible. i forget how it ended. anyway, in that book about dreams it says if u dream about a lion and it doesn't attack you, it means that you are going to over come some kind of obsticle or something to that effect. it's a cool book, i'll have to ask her what the title and author is. anyway, this is my two cents:) |

dude, i have the chills after reading that . i feel for you. that is some wicked ...i would have a heart attack if that happened to me. do u still get it? i am so scared of the dark that would drive me insane. and i don't mean that in a cute way...i mean, i am literally scared to be alone in the dark and i'm 19 going on 20. hahahaha it's weird. my mom and some people who know joke about it, but i don't think they realize that i'm dead serious. when i wasn't living w/ my bf and was still at home with my mom, she had gone on vacation for the weekend and every night she was gone, i made my bf stay on the phone with me through out the whole night even when i slept. i mean he eventually fell asleep too, but just to know that he was on the other line comforted me. i hope i won't always be this scared of the dark...any cures u guys can think of? |

| ok, nm about lucid dreaming, i read what liquid x wrote. i guess it means that you can control your dreams kind of?? that has only happened to me when i was suddenly woken up (like the phone rang or something) and then i went right back to sleep right away and i was able to continue the dream and somewhat control it or whatever. it was cool. |

Yeah I know what you mean about sleep paralysis Spad. I've had it maybe 4-5 times in my life, every time it's as I'm waking up though, not when I'm falling asleep. Just the paralysis by itself is scary enough, but once I remember waking up with sleep paralysis like that, where I was lying on my back with my head tilted to the side so that my nose and mouth were partly buried into the pillow. I just remember waking up (well kinda - it's this really wierd semi-conscious state), realising that I couldn't move and then thinking "oh , I can't breathe". I don't know how long I was paralysed for but it may have been about 10-15 seconds, and eventually I willed myself to wake up fully and I shot up in bed and just started gasping. Looking back I'm not so sure that I was in any real danger (i.e. I doubt I would have suffocated) but it was still pretty damn scary. I'm just glad that I've only ever had it in daylight, cos I'd seriously freak if I was paralysed in the middle of the night and had one of those hallucinations or something.....

Nah sorry mate, I can't swallow any of this sort of stuff. The phenomenon you're talking about here is kinda the opposite of sleep paralysis. It's where instead of your mind being awake and your body still asleep, in this case it's where your mind falls asleep but your body remains awake. Where your mind falls asleep before your body. This is why it almost always occurs (with me anyway) within the first hour or so of falling asleep, and it usually happens when you're really worn down. So, for instance, this usually happens to me when I go to bed feeling tired and fall asleep almost instantly (not a common occurance) and my mind falls asleep before the brain has a chance to shut the body down. So, if the brain enters REM stage sleep (more likely to happen quite quickly if you're feeling really worn down when you go to bed) and begins to dream before it is able to shut the body down, the body is likely to try and enact dreams as they occur (I'm not saying that you're going to jump out of bed and start jogging in time with your dream, but if the body hasn't been paralised by the brain, it is free to move as it pleases, and potentially wake the individual up).
Sleepwalkers have the above problem (where the mind is asleep but the body hasn't been "de-activated") but simply don't "wake up" when the body starts moving.
Hope you all found this informative. :p |
