Its not just new nightclubs that can't survive, its new businesses. According to the latest statistics, 80% close their doors within 1 year. And from the remaining 20%, 80% go bust in the next 4 years. So that means less than 1 in 20 make it through the first 5 years. Why? Because of the infamous Entrepreneurial Myth - the false idea that if you're good at making product or providing a service, you're automatically qualified to sell it. In order words, most new business owners simply have no idea what the hell they're doing.

That's not unique to Toronto, though.

*cough* *cough* That statement for me pretty much sums up 2003. More of that than I've ever seen (since I started boogie'ing in 1998).

One of the major issues with Canada is the emphasis on the party/style than the music/dj. In Europe people will go to a dungeon to see a DJ they love. Here - clubs don't promote the ACTS (the talent) - the promote the NIGHTS - so people become accustomed to "Friday night is good @ ***", "Saturday night is good at ***" rather than "DJ *** is friday, DJ *** is saturday".

Brilliant marketing when you think about it. They could bring in my grandma to play CDs and still ram the joint. My impression of Europe is that nights are more about lineup than venue/scene.

Just my $0.02.

I think that I want to check out this Boa 'constrictor'. Don't ask. So, is it on Spadina? What is the cover?

TO does have a load of nightclubs, but are you sure about that statistic?

I thought London had the highest number of clubs per capita...or is it just the highest number of clubs ?

*not too sure about that stat regarding Toronto, either*

Dan I've heard this before as well but a bit differently.

I heard that Toronto has the most square footage of nightclub space than anywhere in the world. --- This might reflect the problems of being able to maintain a new nightclub in Toronto.

Another reason I think is that the club scene is run by a few and powerful people and if you're not friends with these people, then good luck getting off the ground. These people have so much power in the scene that they can influence how sucessful a new club is. But I really am not to sure. Its just an idea

wha? the phazon system is not crappy at all. almost any sound system if you stand near the tower will hurt your ears. the only sound system that has not done that is stereo's. the sound system at Lotus was definately not better than at the Guv's. The guv has a phazon sound system. here is more info on phazon: http://www.phazonsound.com/sys-tmpl/faqaboutus/

this is a quality sound system. you can say what you want about the clientele and vibe of guv, but their sound system is excellant. i constantly hear ppl saying, I have the guv, but i love to hear *fill name of dj here* on the phazon.

Actually I was talking about the opposite. If you stand at the front of the guv it's as if you're listening to the music from the next room over. You can hardly hear any bass and the general volume is WAY TOO LOW. Just because it's a PHAZON system doesn't mean that Guv's design was created for it. Honestly because the Guv was designed so horribly, you can't even tell that its an infamous phazon. Do you think a fazon system would be so amazing if it was used in an airplane hanger? Or in the middle of the desert?
The thing with phazons is that you have to be at the right place to hear it properly. At the guv, where it's so packed, it's not possible to choose most often, where you are going to be dancing.

I have not been to Guv in a long time due primarily because i play most Saturdays... The Phazon system they have is more than capable of smashing that space and most... The system is installed and tuned for the venue... Strange that you get this complaint... Probably due to maintenance problems... If properly maintained that system is designed to fill the room properly. As for the base, you generally wont feel a punch directly in front of the stack, walk about 5 to 10 feet in front of the stack and it should hit hard, thats the way base works... I still think that Viva has the best sound hands down in the city and not just because i play the club... Clean EAW sound.

Boa kicks Viva's ass for sound....as well as everywhere else. And when i was at Boa, the system was only like 80% complete.
Waltr
I dont think it can kick its ass but it does sound impressive from what you say... When you get to that level of sound its all top quality... Its smart of Boa to put money into sound since to many clubs spend money on drywall and ignore the sound & lighting... I hope to hear it soon...
