Mulholland Drive: WTF??
View this Thread in Original format
Vigilante
Hey all! I just watched Mulholland Drive last night for the first time and i have absolutely no clue what the hell was going on.

Towards the end, i thought i had it for a second, but alas, no, i still didn't understand it.

The only possible idea that i seem to be able to come up with is this:

Diane (played by Naomi Watts) was an aspiring actress in Hollywood who tried out for the leading roll in a film. However, Camilla (or is it Carmella?) also tried out for the film but Camilla got the part. This is how the two of them met. Dianne managed to get smaller roles in a couple of films with Carmella and the two became friends, and later lesbian lovers :eyespop: :eyespop: . However, Camilla betrayed Dianne's love by having an affiar with the movie director guy, and at the party towards the end of the film Camilla and the directir announce their engagement. Dianne is heartbroken.

We find out all of the above at the party at the Mulholland Drive mansion of the movie director toward the end of the film.

Now, Dianne orders the murder of Camilla by the two guys in the limo.
However, we know at the start of the movie that this fails because of the car crash. At the same time as this is happening, Dianne is going crazy, and she eventually shoots herself in the head, while lying on the bed in her apartment.

This brings us back to the start of the movie and the car crash. After the crash, Camilla stumbles down the hill towards Hollywood and ends up in the house. She later meets Bettie (ANOTHER character, also played by Naomi Watts), who has just arrived in Hollywood to pursue a movie career.

She ends up becoming friends with Camilla while trying to protect her and help her find her lost identity. The two also become lesbian lovers :eyespop: :eyespop:  .

That is all i can gather about the relationships.

Now, the underlying story about the corrupt enertainment executives and the film director has something to do with Dianne's payoff the murder/ruin Camilla.....

, that movie messed with my head. I know there are several innacuracies with my above synopsis, and a lot of it still doesn't make sense, so I am going to watch it again.

What do you all think about the movie??? Any ideas about what happens in the movie????

I watched it up to the part where the two chicks were messing around with each other. After that it was unbearably ing stupid, so I stopped watching it.

That site will explain a LOT of what is confusing you. Basically, the entire movie is a "dream", until the very ending.

Thanks for the link!

I also considered the dream scenario as another possibility when i watched it, especially after the second lesbian scene when it all seems a bit surreal.

i hated that movie. it was an utter waste of my time. wut movie comes with a little brochure or card like thing with 10 clues (or however many cuz i can't remember) on things to look for in the movie so that you can figure out what it means?! like...my best friend owned it on vcr and that little instruction booklet came with it.

i understand it is a cult movie and i generally enjoy cult movies, esp. ones produced by lionsgate but this one jus didn't do it for me.

Speaking of mind movies, have you seen Memento? Done by Christopher Nolan, the movie is a pure work of art. Easily in my top 3 list of all time...

Dune...

i didn't really like memento for some reason... at the end i was like "yeah, so?". i did like the whole thing about how we choose what to remember, but overall it didn't impress me much.

as for mind movies, donnie darko is pretty ing intense. so's vanilla sky, but it's more of a love story. that scene on the roof just makes me tear-eyed every time i see it.

i really like fight club because of its existentialism... that's all that comes to mind atm
