well i have rogers cable in ontario toronto and i got to say i am completely un-satisfied with my internet.. people say it's faster then dsl or whatever but heck this pos modem gets me jumping all over the place... take my dls for an example.. it ranges from 200kbps to 800kbps sometimes.. the transfer rate for songs and such hits up in the 5kbps or maybe if im lucky a 10 or a 20.. but that's it.. no more.. and i have spybot - ad-aware and i've formatted my computer many times.. but it just doesnt cut it..
the worst part is sometimes my "ping" gets up in the 500's when im playing multiplayer games.. does anyone know how to increase my kpbs transfer rate.. it's really annoying
i might change internet's just because of that.. or can it be my old modem.. because i've had this modem for around a good four-five years now and i'm wondering if its time to get a new modem.. any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated |

the isp out there is probably stretching the servers too much. I would complain to them that they need more servers. Thats the way it was about 4 years ago when I first got cable. it was quick, but then it slowed ot the speeds your experiencing.
so me and my friend had a bunch of people call in and bitch and soon a new server or two popped up and I was maxing the connection out.
and what is the speeds on your plan, used to be 1.4mbs down and something slow up, but some cable companie doubled it to 3 mbsec..?
with either of those speeds you will never see 800k/sec, 1.4mbs maxes at 180 er so and double that for the otehr speed, so that is what you should expect. |

i have RoadRunner here in SoCal and it came pretty fast. I did use a guide to speed it up even faster tho.

Have you ever been to an isp? They use lots and lots (racks) of routers to handle connections. :) More than likely, they don't have enough bandwidth and are stretching their copper (being cheap):p Or you have a bunch of bastard p2p users on your pipe... or both. You'll get in DHEEP for fscking with your cable modem :) |

correct. be sure to check with ur ISP if it is ok to make changes to your system for optimal bandwitdh. This was a problem for many people when cable first came out. As far as i know, all those companies have given it a leeway. Check ur speed at the broadband test on cnet.com, go to speedguide.net, download the TCP Optimizer and check the results afterwards.
just don't ever look up for Uncapping your bandwith. it'll get u godlike speed, but its illegal. |

I think we are using different nomenclature. |

Yah but one of you is using correct terms. Routers are not servers. They are very diffrent. |

| I'd just like to clarify a bit. There may or may not be servers between your connection and "the internet." What I'm trying to say is that servers are not causing a bandwidth bottleneck, although routers and lack of bandwidth in general may :) |

eitherway, I don't think it is anything that StalkerElmo has control over,
so I say biatch at your ISP until you get up to the speeds you expect. |

I used to work for Comcast Cable back in Chicago and every now and then we would get somebody overclocking the modems. I don't know how it's done because i was just a simple field technician but from what i've heard every modem has it's own bios and if u can access it you can overclock it just like your processor. And don't flame me for saying that...that's what i heard and I, myself have no ing clue how to do it. All i know is that this can get you banned for life. I've seen it done before.
I know how to get free cable internet though :D |

from whatI remember you could only do that with older modems, then I think everyone except roadrunner changed the way it worked so that it was capped on their side. so you would have to get into their stuff to give you more bandwidth.
that was the last I heard of it, it oculd have changed. |
