Ok, seriously, you must promise not to hate me

I have been an avid trance listener for probably 4 good years now. I have found that I still engulf myself in it. I listen to it constantly when driving or on the computer.

I have been to clubs, but only a small few that actually play my music. The rest were pop-dance music clubs. So I'm not that experienced in the trance club scene.

Here's my thing. I am stuck down in the southern part of the US (Originally from Houston, i.e. urban) in a town with just under 150k pop. This is why I don't have many trance club experiences.

I have always desired DJ'ing, and fully intend on purchasing turntables when I have extra cash flow ( and no I don't live with parents). For 3 years I have desired it, and thought it was a phase. Still I cannot pull myself away from Trance, deep house, GOA. So I have decided, even if I never make money at this, I would still do it. That is when I realized that this was worth doing.

Now, you probably wonder how I expected to get started in electronic music in a small town southern city.

Well, I do still visit large cities, and more and more main stream clubs are playing the previously underground dance and chill music. There is a growing market and I have found out that many people around me (who I never figured would like Trance) exclaiming how "awesome" it would be to have a club here, and not have to drive hours to a major city on weekends.

This coincided with the fact that I recently came to find out that my apartment neighbor runs a night club in town. It's strickly hip-hop and R&B. He has been scrounging by in the club bizzie for 7 years.

Anyways, me, knowing computers well, was asked by he to help him with his computer when he found this out. During our conversation I expressed to him my desire to have a club locally and also to DJ for my type of music.

He throws this at me. "Get the people to come, and I will give you a thursday night to do this. We get bar and half of the door fee you get half of door fee."

I am in a college town. We have nothing like a real dance club for european style music. But as I say, when I talk to locals, and I let them hear the type of music I listen to and if they would come to a club playing they, they mostly replied "sure, that's what they play down in the coastal clubs" See, even though many are southerners, they do travel the world for spring break, and most of the hot spots play trance and deep house now.

Sorry for the big ass intro, but this is my question to you..

I have never spun a record. I have never hosted a dance party. The closest I have come is playing trance off my computer at small parties with my friends.

Odly enough, even though my friends don't ever act as obsessed with trance as me, they become very exited to think of a local club playing this music.

What I am asking is, would I be wrong to put the setting up of a trance club in front of learning to DJ?

Reason I wonder is, I scoffed at my neighbors offer, saying that I knew no DJ and, even though I desire to be one, I cannot DJ. He laughed and told me that they do all their music by computer. No DJ. Just setup a tracklist.

So, to get into this, would I be "selling out" to start off being a livingroom DJ with a computer at a real club?

Basically, I see it as, I probably will never have an opportunity like this again and if I can get away with fake DJing until I purchase and learn turntables, then this is probably going to be the only shot I will ever have and a real gig.

Hey man go for it sounds like fun

fake djin, hehe.

do it up man. When are you ever gonna get another chance like this. You could defintely meet new people and you will probably get a demo or two in a few weeks of opening.

I say do it.

But I start thinking about, what if I get it going and some kewl DJ sends a demo, I hear it and know he kicks ass, will I have the balls to bring him in, knowing I can't do what he does, and could possibly lose the running of the musical direction of the club...

Well, your friend kinda offered you partnership for that night.
If i were you, i'd grab that opportunity. You can start practicing now, using Traktor (click here). This is the most professional product nowadays (IMO).
I can do a lot of things, but it doesn't feel like a turntable.
Just learn his ways and play a few thursdays with traktor.

Then when you have the money, buy a turntable, some records... etc...
If a dj comes along, be sure to make him think you're the boss, even if you aren't (and maybe get your friend to play along). That way you will continue to have some control over the music and there will always be a spot for you to play, even if before him and no matter how famous he is/will be.

Thats a normal arrangement for hosting a night- the promoter will get a percentage of the door- the club gets the rest and the var...

Even if you cant dj, you should still jump at it- get yourself another dj who can mix- pay him a small fee, and you keep the rest of the door split....

In the meantime, learn to mix and if the night takes off you will still be able to play when you have learnt....

You learn VERY quickly bring thrown in at the deep end in a clb environment- and you also dont pick up a lot of stupid/bad habits that you can pick up purely playing for your cat in a bedroom

If you are going to do this- make sure its legit and on paper- not just a gentlemans agreement- this is a very nasty business

Go for it-sounds like there is a market for it
TLAM_Alpha
I envy you.

I'd definately go for it. If the night takes off you can get some turntables right away and then just hammer away at them night and day. With motivation like that you'll learn very quickly. Getting people to hear trance even if you cant dj at the moment is definately not a crime.

^^ What he said... SOOOOOOO JEALOUS... i wish I could have a club onwer give me a night.... DAMN... :(

Freak. Although I am not yet a DJ, I know my muzic and I know what I want the people to hear. I think I would trust myself more playing trax off a computer, knowing they are hawt trax than turn it over to a local DJ who probably isn't into the same stuff I am.

From what you typed in your first post- you have been offered a night as a promoter- which not only gives you the cnahce to play out- but also a chance to make a reasonable amount of cash

If that is that case- you are in charge....you can tell the dj what to play- if you say play trance and euro dance all night and he wants to get paid then he will do... nothing to stop you doing some of the night from your computer and putting on a real dj for another part of the night.

Personally i think its a bit of a cop out just setting up a playlist on a computer, not to mention dull and lazy (and before anyone mentions final scratch and PVD- dont even open that can of worms and start me on that one) but hey thats just me-i worked real hard to get where i am and put in many many many months and years of ball busting hard work- not just clicking a few mouse buttons...
Thats the equivilant of me sticking on a 4 or 5 mix cds a nite and pretending to mix with a few 12"s- i would get no satisfaction whatsoever

But the way i see it...there is a bigger opportunity here for you than merely miming trance to a few people....networking, promotion, etc etc

Go for it

Dude, he never said he would do that all his life. I'm sure that as a music lover, few people would be satisfacted from that. That kind of "mixing" is reserved to pop and dance dj's.
