I dont think you can really ask this question to be fair.

It all depends on the time, and those years he was number one he was for a reason wasnt he.

I dont know much of Oakie, BUT, its the question you asked which will be a problem. Its all personal opinion.

In 5 years, they will probably say "Was Tiesto the best of all time?"
As of today ....... probably. As of tomorrow ........ maybe.

Oakie was great, theres no doubt he was a tallented man, if you love him, then good for you :)

As for me, i think Armin will be the best ever, he's only 29 and already #3, He created Blue Fear, the "Blue print" for trance today, and the way he talks about trance in the future, where he wants to take it, and his radio show ASOT, only makes me believe he will be around for a LONG TIME at the top.

Either way glad you found what you believe to be the perfect sound :D

Oaky and sasha got me hooked... what can i say. They moved away from trance cause they knew the sound was at its highest point in 99. Smart move.

as much as i love Tiesto and his 99 innercity set being my all time favourite, I must hand it over to Oaky. This man is the definition of the dance scene without a doubt, and is largely responsible for what it is today (as you can tell by his confidence to do wateva he likes with tracks like Starry Eyed Surprise) !

As 1990 is the year of the pig and 1991 year of the rat etc, 1999 was the year of the oakenfold. Not only was his mixing flawless, his track selection was out of this world. I heard he actually paid Ferry Corsten 750 quid for the Out of the Blue vinyl before it was released.. he knew what he is doing!!

hands up to this legend!

When I first heard that set, I would have been only about 14. I searched high and ing low for that tune and one day I was talking to a good friend who said he got a promo of it ages ago and he didn't really like it(trance isn't his style). He gave it to me for nothing ( I gave him a bottle of scotch later of course). I was almost in tears when I recieved it. It now sits in my record bag and gets played to my whole street everyone in awhile.
No doubt the man was great back then he just sort of lost his way. I loved all of his 99 sets and would have given anything to have seen him play with chicane at the docks but I was to young :(.

Going to have to go see him play when he comes down here again and i'll force him to sign my not over yet promo.

Yep Oakey was fantastic, if not revolutionary. I think dj-wise, has been one of the biggest influences on the sound and growth of trance as a whole.

I'm surprised there are no Oakey bashers in this thread! Usually every Oakey thread ends with a flame war...

Question: Was Oakey the best ever?

Short Answer - Yes with an if....
Long Answer - No with a but....

well said lethal :)

i think armin is better, and i enjoy his stuff more, and i agree he has done alot, and his radio shows kickass and are still going strong after 152 weeks in a row and still not stale at all, which shows just as much about the trance producers there are out there, as it does about armins delivery. i was just saying that Oakey's set at Gatecrasher is just the best live set ever in the history of trance and the universe.

(in my opinion)
;)
