Don't have much to say about his current stuff, although in saying that he can really hit the mark every now and then, but i believe in terms of trance Oakenfold was by far the best ever. I think his essential mix '99 series was so en unbelievable, nothing will EVER EVER come to the heights that those sets did. Compare em to similar sets by artists like pvd, tiesto, judge at the same time, and you just cannot afford not to give oakie the credit he deserves. Flawless mixing, perfect track selection, which lacked the big cheese buildups of today ( mind u i love :p) and just a character to boot. If you havent heard some of oakenfold early sets, i recommend any 1999 essential mix set, all different in style, mosty different tunes, but all with 1 common denominator. PUMPING.

Couldnt agree more. He was the man in 1999. His sets from Homelands and Gatecrasher especially are still the best i have heard. The sound he created has not been heard of since.
The thing about oakenfold was that the tracks he played didnt really seem to be played by anyone else in a big way and no set ever sounded similar.
It was a mix of goa elements and the pure trance sound. I personally do not believe trance would be as popular around the world today if it wasnt for Oakenfold and his 99 sets. AWSOME! |

Yes, I dont think any DJ will ever come close to the outstanding quality he set. Every Mix was fkn brilliant, every mix had its own character! You could go from a breaksy Set like China to a fkn absolute Pumping uplifter like Gatecrasher!
And the trance didnt have ridiculously long builds or anything. It was the best style of trance, sadly i havent heard much in that style since. Oakenfold made Trance so much bigger, forget PvD or Tiesto or anyone as being the people that made it big. Oakey made it big and they simply were more popular after him.
Hey he wasnt only awsome in 1999, just remember his Tranceport CD from 97, his Resident CD from 97-98, which are all time classics. All the tracks on there we consider classics now.
Even his OLD stuff like Fluro, fkn mint!
ALthough i still wanna hear some of his old Acid House stuff!
Even his GU cds! I mean a D&B cd just about! and 007 was briliant. Talk about eclesticism, djs that play that many different styles well (eg Mark Dyn) are just fkn legends! :D |

Totally agree. I love the live@Lotherton Hall set, especially when he drops universal nation and gull. Couldn't agree more on track selection either, that's what made oakenfold great, he played tunes no one else had. Mind you he signed half of these to Perfecto then never released them so they would never become available! It seems these days most dj's play the same tunes, it's hard to find someone who plays songs no one else has. |

Thats the Gatecrasher set, imo THE best 86 mins of driving euphoric trance in 1 single hit i have ever heard.
AND PETE TONG in the middle of it:
"I said nice one bruvva"
"I SAID NICE ONEEEEEEEEE"
hahah id give away a lot to be there that nite.
Like Matt_A said Oakie @ china was playing breaks, but was still able to capture this underlying beat, drivy beat throughout the whole set, that towards the end just explodes with skip raiders.
I have respect for Oakenfold, he moved on, he got the best he thought he could get out of the sound so he moved on. Sure he hasnt found the same success, but only time will tell, but i have a feeling a true artist like oakenfold will only be kept down for so long. |

Like any other tranceaddicts, Oakie's Tranceport CD is my first
introduction to trance back in '97. And so as he captivated the
heart of millions of trance fans out there, his Essential Mix
world tour in 99 is indeed, legendary.
Jon Vesta - Gull fark yeah!!! :happy2::happy2::happy2:
..Not to mention his Goa mix (silver and gold) .. pure class!!:gsmile: :gsmile:
we should have an "Oakenfold Day" of something to commemorate his
contribution to dance music.. sure he's mega-evil-corporation now
and his mixing is not the best, but we wouldn't get very far without
him... :D :D :D |

Yeh, Oakey was the best ever!! :D
His mixes pre-2000 are fantastically good, probably still the sets I listen to most. In fact im gonna go listen to his goa mixes now and maybe some of his EM world tour ;)
After listening to his set from Hungary - which is utterly appauling, possibly the worst set I have ever downloaded, its such a pity he changed his musical direction over the past 4 years.
Who knows maybe he may re-become the best ever??
But I doubt it :nervous: |
