Laptop advice

A relative (in another country) wants my mom to buy a laptop for him because it's cheaper to buy in the US. He's convinced that he wants a Sony Vaio. I figure it too much trouble convincing him on another brand and if some thing goes wrong i dont need the greif. I don't know much about laptops, so can anyone give me some advice? His budget is $1,500.

1. Are Sony Vaio any good?
2. Anyone know of good sites to pick up a good deal?
3. How are refurbs?

Sony Vio's are good laptops. Sony tends to bloat their price though when compared to other laptops.

Tigerdirect.com is where I go for most of my computer needs. Generally though, if you order direct from sony of america's website, you will have better luck getting support for their products.

Refurbs are generally fine. They have been checked out by the original manufacterer and guaranteed to be in working order.

One recommendation for laptops, (and this is even more important when dealing with referbished laptops)....get a good warranty. When your pc breaks down, often you can fix it yourself, or pay a small fee for some pc repair shop to fix it. With laptops, it's a whole different ball game. All the components are integrated onto the motherboard, and the board is proprietary to the company that makes it....so if your laptop goes down, you have to send it back to the company to get it repaired. If you don't have a warranty, you are talking some seriously hefty fees.

I love my Sony Vaio. Though, I would recommend one with an internal CD-Rom. My external is sometimes a pain.
They rarely ever screw up if you take care of them too.;)

Get an Alienware.

i have a dell laptop. i had to send it back for repair, the hard drive died. so glad i had gotten the extended warranty because it was repaired no charge.

thx for the advice i'll make sure i get a good warranty.

just pass on some things i learn today:

lot of complaints against dell (cheap feel and i'm surprised to hear bad customer service). 90% approval for ibm thinkpads, which are very expensive but good service and well built.

Id say go Apple, Alienware, or voodoocomputers

17 inch apple ownz all. built in slot loading DVD burner/RW. built in highspeed wireless internet, an inch thick. and scratch and stain resistant casing. i love mine. only weighs 6.9 lbs compared to the toshiba that weighs 9 lbs and is like 2 inches thick and the same specs. but get a refurb 17 inch if he wants a serious laptop. this comp is amazing. 80 gig internal HD.

While we're on the subject, what's the deal with centrino processors. It's a newer processor yet they all seem to have lower clock speeds (i haven't seen higher than 1.7GHz).
